The question came up in the Gygax-Games list about drow as dark elves. Namely, where did Gary get the idea. According to Col. Pladoh he got it from...

Funk and Wagnall's New Standard Dictionary of the English Language, 1930.

So now you know.

Update: It's also where he got the 'ow' pronunciation. As in, "Ow, a drow. We're screwed now." :p

If this dictionary is where GG got the name from, perhaps it has a pronunciation guide and the eternal question can be answered. Then again that would spoil the fun.

Wow, who knew the answer to resolving the conflict could lie in an old book somewhere that some old smart guy read once.

...

And they say D&D is fantasy... BAH!

A.

I couldn't find a 1930 F&W at the house, but according to my 1927 New Websters International Dictionary;

Drow (Dro). Scot. var. of TROW,
an elf or goblin

The pronunciation shows a "long" o, I just couldn't figure out how to do that here.

You mean [drō]. And, naturally. [drau] indeed. Whoever came up with that nonsense? ;)

Does this mean we will start arguing that drow are now goblins? :confused:
My beef = Drow were orginally linked to the Unseelie Court; while Elves belong to the Seelie court. Anyone want to press thier matter?
