Options of killing the undesired player are not on the pole for reasons- the Mods might close the thread and the FBI might actually start looking for your missing Player in your back yard. ;)

Only did it once. Removed myself from play because I didn't have the numbers and from there their game stuttered a wee bit before collapsing. I then invited those I wanted to. This could only have worked because I did most of the prep, wasn't mates with everyone, and I knew noone would step up to the mark in my absence.

Asked the other players what their feelings were on the matter, then if there was a general concencus calling/e-mailing/telling the ex-player that their presence was no longer desired at the game. This has happened about four to six times over a period of thirty (?!) years.

I have backed down after a time on two of these players, only one was allowed to keep going after a probationary period. (The other did not make it through the first game.) But that one cheated, and asked the other players what he was doing wrong, and fixed it. He had a tendency of making decisions for the group, then taking action on these decisions without first talking to the group, somehow he thought that everyone would agree with him. Ever after the other players could get his goat by saying 'he's doing it again!' But he did get a whole lot better about it.

There have also been groups where I uninvited myself to the game, letting someone else take over as GM.

I have a 3 absense policy in my online games. If people miss three sessions without any prior notice, they get a politely worded email asking them to stop showing up. The joys of online play. Sigh. It has done the trick though. I've had to remove two players from my World's Largest Dungeon game and, really, it was for the best.

I've only had to get rid of one player, and that was way back in highschool, and really, between his uninspired names and the fact that he habitually fell asleep at the table, he knew that the hobby wasn't for him, so it was mutual and we remained friends afterwards.

There was one group I was in where one guy was constantly late because his wife was having health issues of an unspecified nature. People weren't happy he wasn't there, but he was liked quite a bit, so when the DM emailed him to kick him out, the rest of the group lost interest and there was never another session after that.
