Third in a series, this time asking simply how long (in real time) your campaigns last on average. For campaigns still going, either vote for how long it has gone so far or take a guess at how long it will last in total.

Please vote twice, once to reflect your 0-1-2e experiences and once for your 3e experiences. The options for each won't quite be the same, as 3e hasn't been around as long.

1e/2e was usually 2 to 5 years.

My only 3.x campaign that actually finished (i.e. didn't just pitter off) lasted on month shy of 5 years.

The D&D campaign I will start this coming January, I expect to last 3 to 5 years.

Ideally, there'd be a way to vote once for each campaign you've run or played in, but the polling system doesn't allow for that, so this'll have to do. :)

Tough question, since "Campaign" means something entirely different to me today than back when I was running 1e. Back then "My Campaign" was all of the adventures I had run in my own personal world, which covered a lot of ground. That would have lasted nearly ten years. However, the longest any one (semi-consistent) group of PCs did their thing was four years, with significant breaks. Of course, that doesn't include PCs who "retired" to be part-time NPCs and come back for the occasional big high-level adventure.

Sadly, I can't seem to run a 3e campaign to anything approaching a real conclusion. :(

My 3E campaigns last much longer.
I think this is completely due to me being older and has next to nothing to do with edition.

Likewise. I am now much better at managing my time, preparation, disparate personalities etc... all of which translates into longer campaigns because the players just want to keep playing.

a little shy of 11 years avg for the older editions.

about 4 to 6 months on avg for the newest editions. although, one of those lasted nearly 4 years.

Conversely, my 3E campaigns last much shorter. Despite being much better at managing my time, my entire gaming group is older, and thus we have a greater number of responsibilities (ie - jobs, spouses, kids) pulling at us, leaving much less time to play in general, and causing major disruptions to campaigns, causing most to peter out.
