So I pulled out the MMV at the table last night and one of the players asked if I really needed another book, and had I used everything in the first one yet?
I laughed evilly of course, but then decided to see how how I had done.

There are 367 monsters listed by page number on pg3. Including a category like demons or naga, if you have used anything from that category in a 3.5 game.

238 of 367 or 64.8%

Is anyone else this A. retentive or bored?

I used a small percentage of the critters from the first MM. Some of them were too high level for my campaigns; some were just weird & silly (mechamushroom phantom fungus, I'm lookin' at you!); some simply never fit with our campaign worlds; and how many variations of evil-semi-humanoids do you really need, versus levelling same up?

So I'd say we used roughly 20% of the critters in MMI.

Not sure how to answer this. I have used nearly every monster in the book, but in earlier editions. For example, I don't think I've ever used a devil, dragon or naga in any 3e game I've run.

So many monsters play differently in 3e compared to earlier editions, including nearly all the undead, giants and outsiders. However, I customised monsters before and I customise them now, so IMC at least the book differences are of low importance.

over half, is my estimation after looking over the first page of entries. Then again, I tend to use only a very few outsiders/demons/devils. I may have used one or two, but usually in modules, not homebrew stuff. So while I may count "demons" as used, it would be a once in a campaign appearance, while "giants" is fairly frequent at higher levels.

Interesting, I use the 3.5 Monster Manual extensively, but I don't think I've come close to a quarter. For one thing, I started with 3e. Second, I have a tendency to use monsters with class levels. So I've use orcs and hobgoblins a lot. Hobgoblins with fighter levels and dragons probably account for the majority of NPCs.

That said I own MMII, FF, and MMIII. Because you can't have enough monsters. Or enough traps.

After counting them: A lot more than I would have thought (more than 50%)!
Especially considering my players are not even level 10, yet :) Several of them I've only used outside of combat encounters.

I guess, it also helped that I didn't get any of the other monster manuals until very recently.

I just used my first couple of monsters from MM3 (lizardfolk & rot reavers) in the last two sessions. I haven't used anything from MM5, yet (which is the third monster manual I got).

26%-50%, I think. Though I haven't gone through and counted, with only memory to guide me. . .

Hm. No, that doesn't really appeal to me. I'll just stick with the first answer. ;)
