How many of you would consider playing an older version of D&D?

Would you be open to playing an older version of D&D?

  • No way. Been there, done that. D20 ONLY, baby!

  • Sure, although d20 is my first choice.

  • Yes! I love AD&D baby! (or OD&D)

I've played every version of D&D at one point or another (OD&D, AD&D 1e, 2e, 3e, 3.5e), but you would have to do some serious convincing to get me to play any other version. 3.x D&D is just so superior in my mind to any other version (and more fun), and even doing a one-off or the like I'd probably pass on. Like others, if I'm going to play anything other than D&D 3.e I'd just rather play a different game (like Fading Suns VPS). That being said I could play another version of D&D easily since I never get rid of my old books, etc.

Such venom for the older editions in this thread! I've always said that 3e was D&D for people who didn't like D&D in the first place.

I still play B/X D&D and have a ball doing it.

I don't know that I would say that. I had a lot of fun with each edition, and I loved the philosphy behind those editions. However, the follow-through was horrid. 3E was finally a game that still held to the ideals of the earlier editions, but made the system that tried to realize those ideas bearable to play (finally), IMO, of course.

2E drove me away from D&D, but tried as I did I still couldn't find a system that had a philosophy to fantasy gaming that appealed to me (or a system for that matter). Hehe. I went to Alternity for a long time until the dawn of 3E. Played it, loved it, and haven't looked back.

Actually, no. A rough consensus appears to be that people would prefer 3rd Edition first of all, then 1st Edition AD&D, then 2nd Edition AD&D.

That's my order of preference, and agree.

Disliking 2nd Edition is NOT the same thing as disliking D&D, though I suppose people who prefer 2e would see it that way.

That's good, because I can't stand 2e. It made me quit gaming for 10 years.

I was just noting the number of posters who were saying things about how they were never really comfortable with D&D until 3e came along. You can't deny that significant changes were made in 3e from the previous editions that appealed to a different and perhaps broader crowd.

If that happened, I'd politely decline the invite. I have limited funds, all spent on 3.5.

I'm a bit confused. I admit to only having played a bit of 3.0/3.5, but played a lot of 1e and 2e. What would you have to buy to play in a different version? The games I played in, you didn't need anything more than dice and a PHB, and could beg/borrow that if you needed to.

I could see it if you were talking about DMing... that can be pricy. But what do players find themselves buying nowadays?

(Me, I have a huge amount of money in BD&D stuff, but I'd be willing to play anything.)

I just read back through the entire thread. I found five people - Joshua Dyal, Alhazred, Greylock, Psion, FireLance - who said anything which could remotely be construed in that fashion, and only a couple of those directly. Those were easily outnumbered by the number of people who said either, "Sure, if the DM was good!" or "I'd rather play 1st Edition or OD&D." Count them yourself if you don't believe me.

Methinks thou dost protest too much.

This is a slightly biased sample, you know. Anyway, for me, it would have to be an excellent DM and then I'd need to know certain houserules were in place before I'd play 1 or 2E again.

I'd gladly play in any game that proved to be fun. However, like many other people here I'd prefer to avoid 2e if at all possible. I can't say that I'd run any other edition besides 3.x or Original D&D though.
