How much starting equipment does a 6th-level cohort have?

A player is gonna have a new cohort in tonight's adventure, and just asked my by email how much equipment she should have. The cohort will be sixth level.

I can't find the answer on the srd, and don't have my DMG here with me. Does anyone know?

Thanks!

I would use the NPC value myself.

They usually catch up quickly. In a recent campaign I played in we picked up a elf paladin who was a prisoner and like 3 levels below the rest of the party, who joined us fighting the good fight. Even though she was not anyones cohort she quickly accumulated enough magic from things we didn't need (since they were lower level magic and we already had better ) that she was soon on par for any PC at her level.

Worked out well and drained off some treasure that would normally have been turned into gold eventually that it helped balance out the game a little.

Under a more literal interpretation of the followers rules (which we use) they get whatever you give them - period. Part of the write up talks about how they are treated by the PC determines their future outlook. The PC must provide equipment, food, lodging etc. for followers and hirelings. We include cohorts under that list.

Huh. I find this in the SRD:

A leader attracts followers whose alignments are within one step of his own. These characters have gear appropriate to NPCs of their level

But I can't find similar text for cohorts. It does make sense to me that a third-level cleric cohort would have at least as much moolah as a third-level commoner follower, but I'm not sure the rules specify this.

Out of curiosity, where do your PCs find these naked, penniless 5th or 6th-level NPCs?
