How to get rid of my PC?

Courier? Contacted via ritual (Animal Messenger, Spirit Fetch, Sending, etc.)? Already knows about another job offer and after seeing how this one is going, decides it isn't as good an opportunity as the other? Plenty of ways it could be accomplished, even far from civilization.

I suppose

Its a tough one, I dont want it to be dramatic but then I dont want it to be a case of "poof" hes gone

Was going to have him switch sides but then there is more pressure on our DM to make space for him in a future encounter.

If we were close to a town, id say its feasible or between encounters... ideally looking for that magic idea that makes the lightbulb above my head go "Bing!" and sounds just right for this situation... perhaps there isnt one!

OK, negotiate for a bigger cut of the treasure, get in an argument with someone else in the party, then stomp off in a huff.

He could get recalled by his church to serve some sort of penance because he's not upholding the church's tenants. A sort of holy house arrest sort of thing.

1} talk to the gm. He might be willing to use the avenger as a plot point ...like the orcs have a scouting party out and spy this avenger of correlion...so the ambush the group and kill the avenger.

2) talk to the group, explain you want to play something else and have the 'holy house arrest' explain the 'poof'

I recommend less worry about maintaing character integrity after licking a wall for 4gp....

maybe the church, after hearing of his exploits, sends someone to fetch him back for some 'refresher' training ...like meditating at a monastery for a couple of years to reflect on his connection to his divine patron..to put him back on the 'proper' path

Interesting... Going on from that so instead of being an Elfish follower of Corellon (feuded with Gruumush, God of Orcs) he is instead a sleeper agent for the Cult of the Eye. He runs off to the Orcs and betrays the party.

I like it, I am just wondering how to do this without disrupting the current adventure too much.

If he leaves, wouldn't they follow him?
Does he give an excuse before leaving or just go?

It depends on you and your DM. Some DMs love to wing adventures and improvise, and they absolutely wouldn't mind if you take the initiative and pull a crazy stunt like this.

Most DMs, however, would like a fair warning about this sort of thing. Contact your DM outside of the session and warn him of the plan that you want your PC to turn evil and betray the party. If I was the DM, I'd absolutely love to have a new campaign villain handed to me like this.

And yes, of course the rest of the party would follow him if he leaves. That's what the Stealth skill is for...

It sounds like your character has lost his faith. He once fought for something, now he fights for nothing at all. I would have him lose faith and sink into depression and drink himself into uselessness. He curses his deity for the evil things he has done in his/her name and as a result loses his access to divine power. Not everybody dies a hero.

You could even have an inquisitor or fellow paladin from his order come and drag him back home for 're-education'.

If he descends into being a self-loathing tragic figure, it gives the GM the ability to bring him back as either a friend or a foe at a later stage.
