D&D 5E How to translate and effect of 'Only masterwork weapons can crit' house rule in 5E?

You would need to define a Masterwork property. You could either stick with +300gp/+1 to attack rolls or (my preference) +100gp/allows crits.

Not having yet read the PHB I'd definitely go for the latter.

I generally agree with this. However, I have a slight concern where things like the Rogue's Sneak Attack are concerned - because this ability does give extra dice on a crit in 5e (unlike 3e)

I didn't spot this in the Basic Rules. But even so, by the time the attack is giving significant damage, the PCs are likely to have masterwork or magic weapons anyway (says he not having read the PHB :))

You're probably also bumming out the spellcasters a bit.

Ah, that's the advice of unintended side effect I was after. You know, I'm cool with that at low levels but it might be significant at higher levels. Maybe 'Cantrips cannot crit'?

Crits in 5e don't seem to scale crazy like they did in 3rd.

Not sure if you need the rule at all to be honest. Also, rolling a 20 is fun.

But, if you think you need it.

A natural 20 is a crit, but it doesnt do extra damage. Just auto hits.
Masterwork weapons have an extra cost and gain extra damage on a "crit".
If a class or feat reduces the roll needed for a crit, it still works
if a class or feat gives extra benefits on a crit they still work.
Magical Weapons are considered Masterwork


I think this would work without having to change class features ... just ignore the roll damage twice portion of a critical hit.
