D&D 4E How would you re-envision Darksun with 4e?

yes but see I always hated that even though Darksun really took the plunge and wiped the dragons out (I think they were wiped out by the champions like they did with the other races...or perhaps they never existed at all. Don't really remember fully)
But then they went and ruined it by introducing dragons AGAIN; except they were now sorceror-kings.

I mean we really don't need mutated dragons or avangions. Just have the sorceror-Kings be insanly powerful human defilers, that are slowly becoming something more than human. Sure you could make them demonic if you wanted...but come on, don't make them dragons! Don't make them cliched.

A human that uses sorcery and mental powers to transform into a giant reptile is a cliche?

There is one dragon on Athas - THE Dragon. And it's not a D&D dragon, it's an epic level wizard/psion in the body of godzilla. The SKs are all still in the beginning stages of the process and are all pretty much still human.

Sorta what I was thinking. I'm a far bigger fan of coming up with an entirely new nature and definition for a fantasy cliche than just leaving out that cliche.

Flying, skinny godzilla ;), that breathes superheated sand.

Oh, and drains life.

I am not sure you read the Dark Sun boxed set now. I think your thinking of another setting, lol.

First off, there never were dragons before the cleansing war. Then, the champions of rajaat used their dark rituals to turn ONE of their kind into the Dragon, Borys. Their is one dragon that terrorizes Athas and its more myth than reality in most peoples lives in the setting. Its a dark, omnimus cloud hanging over the setting. Its one of the cool things about Dark Sun too.

Now, it is true the surviving Champions are now the sorcerer kings (or queens) and are seeking to become dragons themselves, but they are all in low levels of the ritual, with Nibenay being furthest along as a 3rd level dragon (10 being the full transformation). In fact, it is likely nibenay's true form on the cover of the Dragon King's book, as Borys is on the cover of the Valley of Dust and Fire.

World of Darkness not withstanding you mean?

DC

WOD didn't go backwards and say "oh, wait everyone, we messed up. Forget everything that happened after Ravnos woke up. We like this better..." They took the whole thing and chucked it, and started anew. oWOD and nWOD are two completely different settings.

I would expect something more along the lines of the Dragonlance books or the Star Wars books: This is what everything is like NOW, but for those that would like to play during Era X, here's what you can do...

I would very much like Dark Sun to recapture the feel of the early days, but I think "going back to before the prism pentad" is a bit unrealistic.

I'd have to agree with rob626, get rid of the uber-NPCs, which seems to be the direction that WoC is going anyway. Make the PCs centeral. However, I hope they don't make it too heroic. The bleakness of the setting is one thing that makes it unique. Andventures could revolve around simply trying to survive.

One thing i hope they don't change is the dragons. Trying to change the setting to fit in with he core-setting would ruin DS. Keep dragons and avions how they are. And dragonborn would not fit in DS.

One last thing- Bards: IMO bards were dumb. Dump the class. If 4e rogues are diverse enough they may fill the gap. Actually what niche did they fill? Why are there poison using musicians?

*shrug* So do the same thing with Dark Sun. Get rid of all the accumulated world-background, toss Rajaat and the Champions, and give the sorceror-kings a new back story. Ditch elemental clerics--they were a crude hack to cover for the fact that you had to have a healer class in 2E. Incorporate some of the 4E cosmology, or make up a totally new one. Even the original boxed set, cool though it was, need not be copied over wholesale.
