How would you respond to someone like this?

The nature of 3E with it's clearly defined maths do allow for character optimization better than many other systems. And it comes without training wheels. That doesn't mean using it was difficult. Transparency of the rules works both ways - the DM too can notice when something becomes too powerful.

BTW, we had one of those Spiked Chain dudes in our game. Wasn't that broken even though it looks insane on paper. (In actual play you have to actually throw some dice to do all that stuff ;))

Actually, there are a lot of really good d20 threads over there

Take a look again, Cro - unless Yamo and a few others've stopped posting, the signal-to-noise ratio there is pretty godawful when it comes to d20 games beyond True20 and MnM.

Thing is, I bet if it was a RL situation, you'd hear similar conversation being said by the fighters. Many of the guys on Ultimate Fighting Championship or such are specialized in one type of fighting or even one move.

I'd make anyone who wants more realism in combats to watch UFC. It's just so boring, IMO. Mostly grappling because nobody wants to on kick / fist range and then one lucky shot can sway it either way. Give HPs anyday over that.

well, there's lots of noise in the threads on EN World too. I actually find some d20 discussion is better there since people of negative opinions are allowed to speak their mind and not get flamed like can happen here

My response, generally speaking?

"*shrug* Play what you like. You get abuse in any system. That's a function of the player, not the game. Besides, you think that's bad? Try GURPS some time."

How would I respond? I'd ask him what exactly he had a problem with.

Reach weapons?
A trained fighter being able to trip opponents?
Being able to get better at your chosen combat style by focusing on it?
Attacks of opportunity?
A weapon which is a bit silly but requires specific training to use?
Fighters who put a 13 in intelligence?
Weapon specialisation?
Players who blatantly don't follow the rules?

Some of this was in 1st edition, and the stuff that wasn't improves the game, in my opinion.

I admit opinions vary on whether having attacks of opportunity is a good thing or not. As a player who likes playing spellcasters I am delighted that the monsters can no longer waltz past the rest of the party and threaten my meagre supply of hit points.

I'd also be curious to know how the potential for the existence of a fighter who uses a spiked chain makes 3rd edition D&D a travesty of a role-playing game and turns it into an insane attempt to reproduce a computer game by using pencils and dice.

(But I wouldn't mention Pun-Pun or the hulking hurler :) )

Name ten.

Might not be too hard if you count some OGL stuff like Castles and Crusades, Iron Heroes or other deviants, but I doubt you'd find ten D&D positive threads.

The interesting thing is that the guy who posted the rant that Psychic Skeksis quotes (Hunter Simon is his name) is currently getting raked over the coals at RPGnet for being so negative and surly towards D&D. Check out the thread (or not :) ):

This is me laughing really, really hard. HS is one of the crowd (along with Yamo and some others) I was speaking of. Thanks, CM.

Even the people who don't like D&D get tired of the bashing but can't stop themselves from responding. If they just ignored it, it'd go away.
