D&D General I am so done with kickstarter

I've never been into Kickstarter but I have backed my first one that is ending in a couple days.

It is from a small minis store that has a great reputation among collectors.

They make the minis themselves so there shouldn't be a big delay due to shipping and such.

I think the expected delivery date is September which is some amount of time but close enough that I can look forward to it.

I don't believe any projects I've backed have failed to deliver at a reasonable level. Granted, I haven't really used everything I've gotten and a few have been on the disappointing side (as in, yeah, that sounded cooler than it turned out to be). But none have outright failed to deliver what the campaign was for.

I’ve had a few fail to deliver. One paid their artists upfront, who then didn’t deliver and disappeared. They ran out of money and couldn’t finish. Another refused to release anything that wasn’t perfect, including early access on Steam. They never delivered (and pissed people off when they started working on other stuff instead of the game people had given them money to make).

I also have a few that are extremely late. One is due to court proceedings (the Great Kingdom documentary), but the others seem to be due to scope creep or a lack of project management experience causing timelines to shift badly.

I think you must be the unluckiest person in the world. I still can't get over that. 16?!?!?
I think you may have misunderstood 16 I back but didn't fund so I didn't pay... the succesful ones so out of 35 that funded 5 lost me money...

but 16 of things I wanted just didnt' (including 2 attempts at a relatively inexpensive tarrasque figure)

Expectations... I think the only reason to be disappointed with KS itself is not understanding the platform and then not doing your research and risk analysis for each project you chose to back. People should hopefully understand that KS can and is different things for different projects. It can be a pre-order system, or it can be a 'support a creator with a cool idea' fundraiser, or other things as well.

I've supported 8 KS projects. Only 1 so far has not delivered, The Bard Chronicles and it is about 8 months late. But I'm not disappointed, because this clearly fell into the 'support a creator' category and if I never get it, that's ok. To me it was more about supporting an artist with a cool idea for $15. The one that worried me the most was Tilt Five, because it was a hefty chunk of money ($300) and a technology challenge. It ended up being 2 years late, but they were pretty active keeping things updated as well it was clear that they creator had not moved on to other projects.

I would never blame the platform (KS) for any failures, it would just make me more cautious for supporting future projects.

Yeah, I'll only consider a Kickstarter from someone with an existing track record of success at this point. And the EN Publishing ones get a special mention here - I very much appreciate the immediate fulfilment!
Disappointed. Kind of hard to get started then.... But I understand.
