D&D (2024) I am so torn [UPDATE: I bought it]

My line in the sand has been "release the 3.5 SRD into CC" because the threat of "de-authorizing" the OGL is really only an issue for those games and companies reliant on the 3.5 SRD via the OGL. However, those seem fewer and fewer these days. In fact, I am not sure if any currently published games or companies are dependent on that situation anymore.
The last timeline given for releasing older editions to CC was simply: after all the core books are released. So I would hope sometime this spring or early summer for the 3e SRD

The only 5e books I've purchased are the core three. That was mainly to see what developments had occurred and be able to participate in 5e games if I had a chance. I will probably by the core three of the new edition so I can be conversant with whatever changes are happening.

I don't say this with any pride; this is more a statement of disappointment than anything else. That said, I already have so many D&D books all that I need is a rules overview. It would be nice to be excited about a book release again.

To be clear, are those files downloaded onto your computer? Likewise, could you use them if FG didn't want you to on their platform, or even shut down altogether?

I know that the question of renting vs. owning digital materials is a separate consideration, but I'm curious.
FG is a service so I assume if they closed down at the very least you would have to jump through hoops to set up a server. But WotC can't cancel the license and make their rulesets not work anymore.

If I want to play a 5e fantasy game I have A5e and Shadowdark. If I want a crunchier fantasy game I have SWADE, PF1, GURPS.
This is a complete aside, but:

a) Shadowdark is not a 5E game. It is much, much closer to a B/X game.
b) You think SWADE is crunchier than 5E?
