I DM Standing up

I do both, but I also sit away from the table. I like to be away from the players when they are discussing things among themselves, then I move in when an NPC is on-scene. But, I have been thinking that I need to adjust my "table habits" a bit lately. Just not sure how - we have a large group.

I'd probably GM better from a podium really, I don't sit in my chair enough that most of the time it can end up just being a shelf to stack books in so I don't have to bend down all the way to the floor and to keep people from kicking them.

On the other hand, I probably wouldn't stand behind the podium either. It would just be easier to read things when they were placed higher. Between the standing and the wild arm movements, in character voices, and a tendency to get in people's faces occassionally while playing an NPC it's amazing that people haven't slapped me really.

I stumbled into the DMing while standing thing during what has to be the best game session I ever ran. It was a d20 Modern one-shot I ran while visiting some friends who live out of town. I was told to expect three players and got seven instead, which meant that I had totally scrap my planned scenario to account for the extra players.

Normally that level of improvising doesn't work great for me, but that day everything just fell into place perfectly. Early in the session when I had a speaker addressing an audience which the PCs were in, I stood up to better act out the speaker, and after that I never sat back down again. I think the standing up really helped push things over the top because I've noticed I tend to think quickest when I'm standing up.

I stand frequently. I move around the table a lot. We use a lot of miniatures but even when I did not use minis I stood and moved around quite a bit.

when I have room to stand I do, it keeps me awake and helps keep my players focused on the game. Lately though I havent had that much room to stand.

I can't sit still while I'm DMing. I don't know if it's hyperactivity disorder or what, but even when my legs are aching after pacing back and forth for four straight hours, I can't stay sit down for more than five minutes at a time. My players are starting to catch onto this and make snide remarks about the chairs not being comfortable.

Is there a 12-step program for this? :heh:

I stand up all session, especially to move minis around and such. Once a long session is over and the DM adrenaline stops pumping I'm exhausted both mentally & physically. That's the only kind of workout I get, I guess.
