I found a near mint copy of D&Dg with Cthulhu and Elric for 18 bucks!

Anyone have a link to an image of this item, or a better description of what exactly it is and what makes it so rare?

And 'grats to Flexor!

My first print DDG is my favourite book. Using it*, I built an entire series of levels on Yuggoth (via a teleporter from one of my main dungeons). Creeps the hell out of PCs when they realise just where they've gone, and what they're liable to run up against.

:D

*okay, so its not like you need it or anything, but EO's artwork is soooo inspirational, and there's nothing like leaving the page with Great Cthulhu's stats out while you go to grab a beer and listening to the frenzied whispering coming from the other room....

Congrats Flexor! Those are a rare find nowdays!

I actually came across two in three weeks time back in high school (13 years ago). One I gave a guy $30 for a whole box of old D&D stuff, and there happened to be a MINT copy of that book in there! (He was an idiot- trying to sell off his older bro's D&D stuff he gave him for a new car stereo). The other one I found in a local game store a few weeks later, with only a dinged corner and a name written inside the cover for $40. Needless to say, I snagged it too. I've only seen one or two since then, and they were in really sad shape. Sounds like you got lucky!

I have 2 copies, one i paid $50 bucks for online several years ago, the second I paid 10 bucks for about 2 years ago at a recyled book store. I love it when book stores don't know what they have ;)

Long ago, my best friend (who introduced me to D&D) gave me the "illegal" Dieties & Demigods (with the Cthulhu and Elric mythos) on permanent loan. It's now been, what, 20 years? I'm pretty sure he's not going to ask for it back. ;)

The covers are beat up, and I at one point filled in some of the pictures with colored pencils, but I treasure that book like no other.

Ah, memories.

My Dear, departed Grandmother boughtme mine. Yuo have not lived til you've had a 60 year old woman at a birthday party for 12 year olds trying to read Cthuloid names aloud

"Chul-THOO-THOO"

One of my fondest memories.

An excerpt from the explanation page provided by Blegh:

The first printing of Deities & Demigods included the mythoi of Cthulhu and Melnibone._ The ideas behind the Cthulhu mythos were in the public domain at that time, but copyright on the Cthulhu books in print was owned by Arkham House, who had licensed Chaosium to create a Cthulhu RPG ... TSR then contacted Michael Moorcock, who gave permission for TSR to include the Melnibonean mythos in Deities & Demigods. However, again, Chaosium had already arranged for a license to create an Elric RPG. ...

You can imagine where this led, and why that particular book is now a collectors item for those of us who are nerdy enough know about it.
