I found a near mint copy of D&Dg with Cthulhu and Elric for 18 bucks!

I bought mine about 14 years ago for $30. Still in good shape.

Used that sucked all the time.

Now in that book, Stormbringer was powerful eh? Never fully explained, but powerful nontheless.

Sad that Chaosium couldn't improve on that with their Dragonlords book...

I don't think the guy who was sold it to me knew what it was. He says he's got a bunch of old AD&D stuff that he's selling as well.

Dude! You do realize that sort of thing usually only happens once in a lifetime, right? Take him for everything that you can.:D

Heh, I got my first copy of the D&D-G over 20 years ago (along with the PHB, DMG and MM plus dice) for fifteen bucks from one of my brother's friends -- he needed money for ...um... ''herbs'' (yeah, that's the ticket) real bad -- and my second copy years later in a lot at an auction held at a con years later.

One guy wanted one freaking thing in the lot and bid the sucker up to almost a hundred. He kept turning and glaring at me and Milady whenever we outbid him.:D

And 'grats to Flexor!

My first print DDG is my favourite book. Using it*, I built an entire series of levels on Yuggoth (via a teleporter from one of my main dungeons). Creeps the hell out of PCs when they realise just where they've gone, and what they're liable to run up against.

:D

*okay, so its not like you need it or anything, but EO's artwork is soooo inspirational, and there's nothing like leaving the page with Great Cthulhu's stats out while you go to grab a beer and listening to the frenzied whispering coming from the other room....

OH! First edition Deities and Demigods!

Oh crud. I know where one is, for $10. I just bought a third edition DMG there...and passed on the Deities & Demigods copy (which I flipped through and noted that it had Cthulu, so it's an earlier edition though not necessarily first). Hrm. I'm gonna have to go back there now...but it is an hour and a half away.

I've still got mine that I bought when it came out. Let a "friend" borrow it the same week that I bought it and he absolutely trashed the cover (but thankfully not the interior). Scratch one "friend" ;) :D

Later another friend who was getting out of RPGs gave me his pristine mint copy. Unfortunately for him, with 3E he got back into it and had to go and buy himself another copy of it.

If you are persistant, you can find one pretty reasonably on eBay:

The prices have ranged from $18.50 up to $107.50

There are some on auction right now, also:

If you have to have it, then good luck bidding. It really is a great book...

Oh brother. I think I sold my copy for about $7 at a con 20+ years ago. (I bought it like I bought everything then; wasn't using it...)

I think I've got the deal of the thread so far:

About 7 years ago, I wander into a used bookstore, and they've got a handful of RPG books, 2 of which are near-mint Deities & Demigods.

1 of them was the first printing.

Both were $5.

I left with one of them.

:D

Save the trip, I'd be willing bet you that it is not a 1st Printing with the two other mythos. I have a very extensive collection of 1E books, picked up at used book stores and flea markets, but none of my four copies of Dieties & Demigods is the original printing. I will find one some day.....

I got one with all 17 pantheons. Thank God that I bought it when it first came out. If it wasn't for that book I doubt I would have read the Elric books when I was that young. :) That reminds me, I still need to pick up the last two Elric books that have come out the last couple of years.

An excerpt from the explanation page provided by Blegh:

The first printing of Deities & Demigods included the mythoi of Cthulhu and Melnibone._ The ideas behind the Cthulhu mythos were in the public domain at that time, but copyright on the Cthulhu books in print was owned by Arkham House, who had licensed Chaosium to create a Cthulhu RPG ... TSR then contacted Michael Moorcock, who gave permission for TSR to include the Melnibonean mythos in Deities & Demigods. However, again, Chaosium had already arranged for a license to create an Elric RPG. ...

You can imagine where this led, and why that particular book is now a collectors item for those of us who are nerdy enough know about it.

Copyright in all Lovecraft stories had apparently passed into the public domain long before this, according to all available evidence, so Arkham House's copyright claim is highly iffy, though maybe they could claim trademark rights (*yech* - hate that). Moorcock's work is of course in copyright, I guess maybe he'd granted an exclusive license to Chaosium & didn't know it. :)
