I Got Into CMU! [Update- Tufts too!]

Once your in, and have taken the pre-reqs that the CS majors have already met, you should be able to switch to the CS college. Can't say I know anything other than from experience though. I had to take Computer Science 101 to get credit for my programming experience in order to switch into the BS CS degree at my school.

Congratulations, Connor. Don't forget to study, college is much harder than high school.

Listen to this man: he knows of what he speaks! The studying can be a real drag, but all of the work pays off--you'll be getting a big job someday because of what you do now. (You also get to party your ass off and drink yourself into a stupor--though don't get yourself hurt--but save that for the weekends, trust me )

I got into Tufts University as well! Its my second choice, and now I'm REALLY freaking out!

Long time ago, I was accepted to CMU for undergrad and toured the place. I chose to do my undergrad elsewhere. I chose Tufts for my graduate work.

Here's the thing. When I was there, oh so long ago, CMU campus was terribly unattractive. Right smack dab in the middle of downtown Pittsburgh. One step you're on campus, the next step in a depressed urban neighborhood. I don't mean to offend any Pittsburghians, but the city in such close proximity was a big mark against the school for me. I was depressed just looking at it.

Tufts is greener, in the near-suburbs. The T will get you to downtown Boston any time you like, but you aren't directly in the urban center. And the urban center of Boston seems to me to be a heck of a lot less brooding than Pittsburgh. YMMV, but do consider the surroundings when choosing your school. It'll influence your morale for 4 pretty important years.

I still like Game Masters the best. Plus, the owner, Phil, is blind and has a concealed carry permit. How can that not be fun?

Oh, yeah, Phil's a hoot. I just figured most freshmen wouldn't have a car, and Phantom is easy walking distance. Are there more tables upstairs? I know there's one over in the minis section, the part that used to be the flaky-New-Age-crystal place.

Since I live near Game Masters I actually do most of my games shopping there (including running a game on alternate Thursdays). Eric, do I know you?

At Phantom they cleaned up all the rooms upstairs and put in several tables (About 4 pretty big ones as I recall). One of the rooms seems to be just Warhammer and Battlefleet Gothic, but that may just be because I typically only go on Weekends during the day when they are running those events. I don't play, myself. I've seen WizKids clicks played in the other room at those same times.

I'd say CMU is a pretty nice campus. Sort of a semi-urban campus. One half of campus borders a light urban Area (Oakland, which is more of a college neighborhood) so you have access to anything you need, while the other side borders Squirrel hill, a wealthy suburban neighborhood, where you don't have the bustle of the city. The College is practically built on top of Schenley Park, an enormous park area with a golf course, hiking and bike trails, fields, trees, a pool and a skating rink. The actual Downtown area is about a 10 minute bus ride away.

CMU is sort of like someone took a rural campus, with all the buildings adjacent to another, it's own courtyards and fields, picked it up, and dropped it in it's entiretly into the middle of a light urban area. You can draw a circle around the campus and the only things in the circle would be the campus. For comparison Pitt (where I went to school) is more of the traditional urban campus, where it is completely immersed in the city.
