I guess Savage Species is out now...

Dear Kahuna Burger:

Our date is off. In fact, I am barricading myself inside a cave with two dozen crates of tinned food, and several boxes of ammunition. You will, of course, understand the reason for this.

No gnoll, goblin, lizardman, kobold, vampire or hill giant?? The whole idea of buying the book is to save the time and effort of converting these races. If it only provides guidelines on how to it, why bother? I'll save myself the money and figure them out without SS.

Regarding goblins and kobolds: I have to wonder if SS provides guidelines for creatures that could be deemed as inferior to baseline humans. Seems pretty dumb to leave the most basic races out in favor of exotic creatures that will not have great appeal due to the ECL restrictions.

Regarding my own statements about vampires as a class: I suppose that the Vampire didn't get a class because it was originally a template, whereas ghouls, mummies, and shadows were monsters unto themselves with actual hit dice and what-not. Also, since the Vampire Lord web enhancement lists some prerequisites that must be fulfilled by an aspiring bloodsucker, I suppose that it should actually be a prestige class for vamps.

Like I'd date a guy who couldn't quote Dragonheart...

OK, I've got the book now. I think the slaad illustration sucks, for the record. Sam Wood's Emancipated Thrall, or whatever that concept is art rocks, as do most of Wayne Reynolds' pieces.

Haven't time to actually read much of it, though.

The book DOES give the starting ECL and stat adjustments for these races. Doing a monster class is merely an option that the book provides. Also, once you have a good starting ECL, it's VERY easy to construct a monster class.

Goblin and kobold are inferior choices to normal races... They'd not even require a monster class.

Gnoll, I tried to do above (and I messed up because I didn't have the book in front of me... mainly because I got the ECL wrong).

Hill giant and vampire are tough to do. Without the book, good luck. With the book, I don't think it would be that big of a deal. They do provide other giants.

I'm not at all upset that they didn't put EVERY monster into this book. It would have taken up too much space, and wiped out too many other interesting things that the book contains. The book does do a good job of giving guidelines on converting any monster in a balanced manner (though some of it is still a little guesswork).

Ah well, to each his own. I still think the slaad kicks butt. There's also a cool kobold wraith illustration, which I like.

Maybe it's just me...but when I read about tail blades I remember thinking "Say didn't Warren of the Ratmen have that..." Oh well was only Ratmen. ;)

There is also the "Battle Harness of the Manticore" and the "Emerald Scale Tail Bracer," both for Lizardmen to wear on their tails -- from Paradigm Concepts' Forged in Magic book.

Use your imagination.

Savage Species pulled from shelves!!

So I called the WotC where Joshua Dyal got his Savage Species and had them hold the book behind the counter for me. "No problem!" they said!

When I showed up there that evening (last night -- and it's a 1/2 hour drive from my house) they told me that they wouldn't sell it to me!!!!!

#@&%!!!!

They told me that WotC had called them (and apparently the other WotC stores) and told them that the street date wasn't until the 16th and they'd better pull the book from their shelves!

[Rant]
I'm still ticked off about that:
A) They wouldn't sell me something that they had in stock

B) ...after they'd told me they'd have it waiting behind the counter for me!

C) They don't know their release dates well enough to avoid hose-ing their customers

D) Wasting an hour and a half for nothing

I'm seriously considering not buying the book now, and I'm definitely not going to be giving the WotC stores my business anymore (I've spent probably $400-$500 at that very store over the last year).

If anyone in the Detroit area cares, it's the WotC in the Fairlane mall in Dearborn.
[/Rant]

So I guess the rest of us get to wait until the 16...
