I guess Savage Species is out now...

Re: Savage Species pulled from shelves!!

So I called the WotC where Joshua Dyal got his Savage Species and had them hold the book behind the counter for me. "No problem!" they said!

When I showed up there that evening (last night -- and it's a 1/2 hour drive from my house) they told me that they wouldn't sell it to me!!!!!

#@&%!!!!

They told me that WotC had called them (and apparently the other WotC stores) and told them that the street date wasn't until the 16th and they'd better pull the book from their shelves!

[Rant]
I'm still ticked off about that:
A) They wouldn't sell me something that they had in stock

B) ...after they'd told me they'd have it waiting behind the counter for me!

C) They don't know their release dates well enough to avoid hose-ing their customers

D) Wasting an hour and a half for nothing

I'm seriously considering not buying the book now, and I'm definitely not going to be giving the WotC stores my business anymore (I've spent probably $400-$500 at that very store over the last year).

If anyone in the Detroit area cares, it's the WotC in the Fairlane mall in Dearborn.
[/Rant]

So I guess the rest of us get to wait until the 16...
If you can make the drive over there, try Underworld in Ann Arbor, they get stuff out a lot faster than anything else in the area. I still go there once in awhile when I want a new book, it's a pain since I live in Clinton Township, but it's worth it.

It's not hard to envision. At the low-levels, the abilities are those of a Vampire Spawn (mostly physical) then as it matures into a full-fledged Vampire it starts to gain the supernatural powers like the ability to summon animals, assume a gaseous form, and dominate wills. Ultimately, the vamp gets the abilities presented in the Vampire Lord web enhancement on the WotC website.

Seems to make sense to me. Wonder why it wouldn't make the cut for SS?
Probably because vampires don't work that way in D&D. When a vampire kills you, you either become a vampire spawn and stay that way forever (or until some enterprising adventurer comes along and kills you again), or you become a "real" vampire which is a template. The template-vampire could then advance as a character class, but the vampiric powers wouldn't change.

D&D vampires are *not* White Wolf vampires that have to learn how to use their vampiric abilities.

Ah well, to each his own. I still think the slaad kicks butt. There's also a cool kobold wraith illustration, which I like.
I don't like any of the illustrations by JJ more than OK, especially from earlier books like ELH. The style just doesn't appeal to me. Sam Wood's concept art for red slaadi is the best I've seen.

I've been there a few times and I loved what I saw, I'll have to give them another try.

I've actually been getting RPG stuff at a local model shop (Ryder's Hobbies -- the only place I could find the ELHB and M&M when they first came out).

I can bet! That's a long drive to be told, "whoops! sorry, we can't give that to you after all." But, the book is really pretty good from what I've seen so far. Although I didn't see rules specifically for Death Slaadi -- red, blue, green and gray, yes. But death slaad, no.

Shadowlight - ya might try calling (or visiting) Old Guard Hobbies on 14(?) and VanDyke, they have a great selection of d20 products.
(is it bad taste pimpin' your favorite hobby shop on these boards???)

No, I think it's extremely good taste! Thanks!!

I mostly wonder when they're going to have it at ENworld's RPG store, since I like to patronize the place where I spend a good 50% of my free time...:)
