I just did something I never though I would do

Am I wrong in thinking there were two OGL rpgs covering that. Wasn't there a Warcraft RPG, then later a World of Warcraft RPG? I may be wrong cause I never picked up either. But I'd heard that there were two and one was much better than the other.

I got the books by Arthaus through White Wolf. The group I played with liked them a lot. I even bought a couple myself and still have them. We played that campaign up to 48th level. I was a Warlock.

Then again, I liked how Arthaus, through White Wolf, handled the Ravenloft setting as well. Others slammed those too.

Well, I'm going back to GURPS.

3.x was great while it lasted but still left me wanting more.

4e definitely isnt my cup of tea...
See, there must be some seriously divergent tastes. I'd rather have major surgery sans anesthesia than play GURPS again. I've got the 3e GURPS book and I periodically read through it and still can't figure out what people see in it. There is no system I like less.

Different strokes and all, I guess.

Yep. I would rather play GURPS over 3E or 4E. That was never the case for me before 3E. With 3E D&D I found GURPS to be easier to GM or play.

Which disturbed me, I still read GURPS and try to find something to prove its more complex than 3E. Nope. Simpler. It only becomes more complex when I add in other genre materials.

If I want "Powers" I'll play Mutants and Masterminds where they belong.
M&M could be used for anything just like 4th ed, If I want to create a fantasy based game in M&M I can, they're just mechanics after all.

I did a cowboy bebop game in M&M (had a feat heavy character and others with powers to represent guns and communication bugs etc), I'm thinking about doing a cowboy bebop game in 4th ed D&D too, the only thing that would limit these things is my imagination.

I can quite happily see me giving pregens to the players made from 4th's rules and depending on how they want to advance giving them different appropriate powers.

I am also equally as happy with seeing fighters being able to pull off extrordinary and/or interesting combat manouvers in combat and seeing these abilities balance across the classes.

On the subject of cancelled pre-orders, I had originally ordered two PHB's from Barnes & Noble (I had a $25 gift card to cover the cost of 1, and was paying for a second). Well, money got tight so I had to cut back to just getting one.

Well, I brought it over to my older nephew to review (he's 13, and was looking forward to it). He looked through the book, handed it back, and said he was going to miss playing D&D (we primarily play RPGA stuff, and he's well aware of the necessity to change to the newest rules to keep playing).

So, glad I got just one. I'll withold judgement on the rules until I've had a chance to play, but it looks like I'll be taking my nephew hunting for our quality time together this fall.

It isn't the complexity of GURPS that bugs me. There's a certain flavor to it that I just don't care for -- like raisins.

Like your experience with GURPS, I've really considered Hero System to replace 3.x because it would give significantly increased precision and freedom without increasing (and potentially decreasing) complexity. When I had that realization, I knew I was DMing my last 3e game, barring certain, specific modules (Rappan Athuk, Ravenloft).

Side note: I'm glad my GURPS commentary appears to come off as meant ("different strokes"), rather than denigrating. After I posted, I realized I might have started a system war, which wasn't the intent.

I cancelled my pre-ordrers too except for KOTS- which I liked, but ended up spending my 4E book money at the TLG $10.00 sale. Then luckily for me got an Amazon GC for Father's Day and ended up grabbing the 4E books.

Dagnabbit there is alot ot love for this old grog- Mechanically and rules-wise it's much simpler than 3.X (yay!) but everytime I get into the Powers section, I get totally turned off (boo!). A bit over the top for my tastes- for D&D anyway. Def geared for a different sort of player and DM than I am.

However 4E seemingly has alot of appeal to my 8 yo Pokemon-obsessed son (he enjoyed alot of the power descriptions I read to him ) , so I'll at least run it for a bit for him. Assuming I can find some decent counters- no way in hell I'm buying random packs of minis from WOTC.
