I canceled my 4th edition pre-order. Amazon hadn't shipped my books yet, and given what I've read, seen, and now the GSL stuff was finally the nail in the coffin for me.

So long, WoTC, and thanks for all the fish.

Funny.....I just ordered the core rulebook set for 3.5 from Chapters. I figure that I've been similarly unimpressed by 4.0 so far. Maybe in another 2-3 years, when they've had time to work on it some more, and there's more support, I might consider again.

But I figure...until now I've been working with the 3.0 books I bought in 2000, they're getting a little beaten, and with the new edition, it's going to be hard to replace them if they fall apart, unless I want to go to the used market. So, I've got a set to last me either until 4.0 gets to a point I'm interested in purchasing it, or we get to 5.0.

And the 4.0 books aren't going to disappear anytime soon. I can always change my mind.

EVERY time a big new shiny comes out for D&D, people pre-order from Amazon. And EVERY time it winds up being delayed from Amazon. 3e was delayed shipping from Amazon. 3.5e was delayed shipping from Amazon. The first sets of D&D minis were delayed shipping from Amazon. I like Amazon and all, but really... Don't get upset at Wizards about it. It's not their fault that Amazon can't keep its promises. I preordered from my FLGS, and it was there at 12:01am opening day.

I agree that the GSL sucks compared to the older licenses. But 4e is still a pretty kick-butt game. You really should try it in play before dismissing it.

When they're bad, they are...still kinda good.

This also applies to things we can't talk about on a family friendly messageboard.

Everytime someone says "when I read the GSL" I get this impression they mean "when someone told me about the GSL"

To be honest I read parts of the GSL but I couldn't be bothered reading the whole thing. I also read Amy Kou'al's simple english interpretation of what the GSL actually means. This confirmed that I did actually interpret what I read in the GSL correctly (either that or we're both wrong! :D ).

From my perspective I am holding off on buying 4E until at least next year. However that is exactly what I planned to do in the first place. We are only 10 sessions into the Shackled City AP and I estimate that it will take us at least another year (and probably a fair bit longer than that) to actually finish it.

In the meantime I'll pay some attention to what people are saying about 4E but you have to read through the flames a lot. I will say that I am not overly happy with the GSL as I understand it though. I hope that companies like Necromancer and Goodman Games negotiate a separate agreement with WotC because if I were them I wouldn't sign it as it stands.

Well, I'm going back to GURPS.

3.x was great while it lasted but still left me wanting more.

4e definitely isnt my cup of tea...

If I want "Powers" I'll play Mutants and Masterminds where they belong.

Same here. I tried to read the entire thing...I really did...but it just kept dragging my eyelids down. I printed out a copy of it to keep on the nightstand, for those evenings when I'm having trouble falling asleep.

But from what I could tell, Amy's "translation" was a fair assessment of its content.

GURPs is a solid game choice, too.

Side note - I (shockingly) have to agree with Mourn. I really didn't like the WoW d20. Lots of re-copied content in all their books, books that reference other books that don't exist or weren't released for years, and it's just overall needlessly clunky at a lot of points. It was just...well, badly written.

Am I wrong in thinking there were two OGL rpgs covering that. Wasn't there a Warcraft RPG, then later a World of Warcraft RPG? I may be wrong cause I never picked up either. But I'd heard that there were two and one was much better than the other.
