I just ordered a copy of Dread

Hi all,

I just ordered a copy of Dread (the game by The Impossible Dream) and after reading the excerpt on their website, I cannot wait for Hallowe'en to arrive. The horror movie marathon is a grand tradition of ours, but I intend to run a game of Dread as well, probably on a different night. We'll see who I choose to invite, but right now I'm thinking I might tend towards my friends who don't play D&D or other RPGs ... less culture shock. :)

Has anyone here tried the game in action? I hope so, if it won an ENnie! :D

I picked a copy up for my birthday, really looking forward to running it - an excellent thread including various examples from play, including Piratecat's can be found:

I played it at Origins and it was amazing. It was the best convention game I've played and probably the best Horror game as well.

Having been away from the boards for a while I've only just heard of this... and have already ordered a copy. What an absolutely amazing concept.

Dread hasn't arrived yet ... but my copy of Jenga has :)

42 blocks is my record so far ... how did I get an Engineering degree without playing this? :)

As one of the early Dread reviewers, I'm really thrilled to see that this game has caught on as well as it has. I truly enjoyed it, both as a game, as a roleplaying game, and as a horror roleplaying game. I'm not blown away by many products, though Dread absolutely did the job. That said, it's one of those game that requires some up front knowledge of horror story structure to truly work well, in my experience. Simply loving horror movies or reading lots of Stephen King won't get the job done. YMMV.

Well, reading lots of Stephen King can certainly help, it just depends how analytical you're gonna be about it. :) I've learned a lot about horror by thinking about why 'Salem's Lot and Pet Sematary scared me the way they did.

Plus he wrote Danse Macabre, which is required non-fiction reading for any horror enthusiast.

I just got my copy a couple of days ago. From what I've browsed it looks pretty cool.

And with a username like that, I can just guess what kinds of horror you'll be tapping into.

Or is Dread for your non-Lovecraftian horror needs?
