Personally, I love Wikipedia but I would never use it as a source. It's great for finding out a bit about pretty much anything, and often has good links.

I actually used Wikipedia as a source in a history paper I wrote this fall. It was about Henry the 8th and the Dissolution of the Monasteries, and I used the doggerel about Henry and his wives from the Wiki entry.

I've got two professors that have in their syllabus that if we attempt to utilize Wiki as a legitimate source, we automatically fail the assignment. They've got such a passionate hatred of the site.

I read recently that they are going to publish an actual Wiki encyclopedia... think that's interesting.

I had a lecturer/tutor this year who thought Wiki was a great source for information...

but then it was a multimedia history & context unit, so maybe that has something to do with it... ;)

Such hatred!

Even without idiotic mandates like that, only a fool relies on a Wiki entry as a good authority. It's good as a quick reference, but you should never try to argue anything significant based on it.
