I might wait 3 years for v.4.5

I say it with a very straight face, 3.5 was not a new edition.

All changes were minor, core books were 80-90% identical, you could take a PC from 3e games and use it in 3.5e without almost any change.

That never stopped any company before (be they an RPG company or any other industry) from calling something a new edition. If all new information was required for something to be a new edition, Exalted 2E was not a new edition at all. You can take an Exalted 1E character and bring him over to Ex 2E with less porting then a 3.0 character to a 3.5 game and they work just fine. How about Microsoft Word? What gets changed? Not much. Expanding the dictionary, some minor presentation stuff that only the true gurus use. The average person saw minimal changes between Word 6.0 and 2003, and there have been IIRC a total of 4 versions between them.

All thats required for a new edition is that the old will no longer be supported and a new base product was launched. 3.0 was no longer supported by WotC the minute that 3.5 came out. It was a new edition in all senses except that they didn't call it a new edition.

Uh, dude, if they're on your shelves, then how could you have skipped them?

Heroes of Horror, Libris Mortis, Unearthed Arcana & Ultimate Monsters Volume I and that's all the 3.5 books I own IIRC. I said I skipped the vast majority of them.

That's pretty much my plan, as well.

Sure, they say now there will be no 4.5, but I have little doubt in a few years we'll see "4B" or "4 Expanded" or somesuch.

I was very lucky in that I went straight from 2E to 3.5, so I don't have any 3.0 paperweights sitting around on my shelves.

Sourcebook creep FTW!!!

I don't understand your argument. Three years worth of fun for the $75-90 you invested in the core rulebooks seems like pretty good value to me. Besides, other RPGs have a much faster rate of 'version creep'.
That is one of the reasons I don't play those other games. If I have to buy a new version of the game every 3 to 4 years then it is a waste of time and money. I want consistant staying power of my investment. If WotC can't provide that then its time to move on to someone who can. 8 to 10 years for a version update is fine. Anything less than that is not.

How long did it take for 1e to go to 2e? How about 2e to 3e? Suddenly WotC takes over and now we get a new version way too often. If I want a game with a fast version creep I'll go play GURPS or Hero System.

You do not HAVE to move on. Your books will not self-destruct and WOTC will not knock on your door to pry them from your hands. Amazing how many people seem to feel that one or both of these will occur.

I firmly believe that this edition change will have a far higher percentage of those who remain behind than in previous editions. In fact, this is the first edition I am specifically not calling an upgrade. All other changes were upgrades, in my mind.

If you want a game with real staying power, why not try Chess? Or such?

You know, I will probably pick up the corebooks just because. One thing I will say is that the breadth of 3.5 books I have will allow me to wait for(at the least) a 2nd printing so my book will have less errors or (at the most) a version 4.5 if WotC goes that route. It will also allow me to make a real decision as far as whether 4e changes things I have issues with or not, once the hype dies down and people start reviewing the system honestly.
