That would be impressive indeed. But do you really think they only started working on it the day it was announced at GenCon? It's much more likely they have been working on it for a year or more already.Treebore said:

I think it's an error to hold off on buying because you fear a revision's coming.
Because, at some point, there will be. It may not be referred to as 4.5 or 4 Revised, but at some point things will change. That is and always has been the truth.
Waiting for something to stop changing before you buy it means that you'll never buy it.
While there are certainly valid reasons for not purchasing 4e, fear of a change coming really should not be one.

I agree they have been working on it since 2005, but they don't even seem to have a "final working version" yet. If you don't even know what the final product is going to look like at this point, how can you effectively play test it? In 6 months? With the last month of that, if not two months, being in lay out and being printed?

I agree with the minority of posters. There may very likely be a 4.5. If wizards/Hasbor thinks it needs more cash in a few years...
Taking Wizards word that there won't be a 4.5 seems a little like wishful thinking.
And finally, there is no way 4.0 will be flawless. There has never been a flawless anything (let along game book). It will need errata etc. I am guessing a lot. They may have been planning 4.0 for years apparently, but according to designer's blogs haven't nailed down some of the basics (like how all the classes work etc). How many months to 4.0? Scary...

Scott Rouse has stated that there will be no 4.5. So, I think that as long as he and others who are there presently are still in their same jobs in a few years, I think this is true.
I asked him how long until 5e and he ballparked 8-10 years.
And, as was stated above, the DI is probably going to be a nice way to test changes for those that participate.

I guess that people who complains about 3e, 4e and (hypothetic) 4.5e don't play Warhammer 40.000, Warhammer Fantasy, Blood Bowl or almost any GW game.
In their games, new edition is something that invariably arrive every four/five years. New edition means new core book, and new army books, and a many new miniatures (as old minis aren't game-worthy anymore, the new ones designed to be better).
So every four years, GW player regularly rebuy most of their stuff. Because almost nobody use old edition.
And gamers do it, they see it as a normal part of gaming. Even if GW games are a lot more expensive than D&D. Different expectations, differents ways of seeing hobby, I guess.

The other side of the coin is that the old game is not broken just because a new version came out, either. If a group were to decide that they could get more fun out of the old before upgrading, then there would be nothing wrong with not upgrading - or perhaps waiting until the next generation is released and thus skipping a cycle.
That is the boundary where I live these days. I don't actually think there will be an official 4.5e. I think there will be a basic 4.0 which will be added upon by new releases (much like Unearthed Arcana and the COmplete books did). And, subtle changes will likely come through the DI. But that being said ... if a group can sit down and legitimately say that they can have 6-8 more years of fun without upgrading, I can't fault them for not upgrading, either!
