I was skipping class... and now I'm not!

I only started skipping classes in my final year, when I met my wife-to-be. I figured that a university education wasn't just about academic subjects... :D

Cheers,

So does this mean that you majored in Pumpkin Toting? ;)

An exercise I highly recommend for students:
Figure out what you're paying per semester. Divide this by the number of weeks in the semester. Divide this by the number of classes per week. This is how much money you're throwing away every time you skip a class that you've paid for.
Hmm. Doesn't work for me, though. Here, anyone can waltz in to a listen to a lecture.

I pay (and it isn't a lot) for gettin' my papers graded and exams.

School offers me many helpful devices of learning. Lectures are only one tool of many.

I skipped a lot of classes my sophmore and junior years, as much as 50% some terms. I was working a lot, so I had at least some excuse. My grades showed the result and I still regret it to this day, especially since it ended up affecting my choices for graduate school.

Very accurate statement. Have you seen an Australian campus in Summer time?

Actually, I guess it doesn't matter where the campus is. Uni girls are a pretty attractive bunch as a general rule.

Dating aside, uni is a great place to network/build up contacts for when you leave to work in your (new?) industry. Some of my best networking was done in the pub, sometimes when skipping lectures to avoid bad lecturers.

Everyone probably gets one or two bad lecturers at some point in their studies. Its up to you to decide when you're better off with your readings and course notes then attending class.

i felt that way about school, and i feel the same way at work. consequently, i usually have one of the best attendance records, if not the best. given how much time i waste at work, that almost evens things out for me. ;)

Guilty on both counts.

I don't skip much... it's really a "treat" that I reserve for special occasions. For example, this morning. I had just finished a major paper for one of my classes, so I figured that I deserved to sleep in a bit this morning. :)

However - when I do skip - I never think of it as throwing away (my very expensive) tuition. I figure, this is the one time in my life when I can *not* show up and really not have to explain anything. *shrugs* I'm a good student, get good grades, and enjoy spending a couple of mornings/semester sleeping while the rest of the world is in class. :)

I skipped a lot in high school, some in college, dropped out and skipped five years in fact, then less so when I went back and finished my degree (magna cum laude, IIRC - or was it summa cum laude? whichever one was the lesser one).

I feel guilty these days because I'll check my schedule for morning meetings the night before. Then, when the alarm goes off in the morning, if I really don't feel like getting up right then, I won't. When this happens, I'm usually only about an hour late getting to work. A few people give me looks, but everyone is pretty used to it by now. And they are all long gone when I leave. And I never see any of them when I'm in on the weekends.

In the end, my job doesn't require me to be there during all of the 'normal' office hours, my boss knows how many hours I put in, thanks heaven I'm salaried so she doesn't have to pay me OT, and doesn't say anything about it. In the past, I've had bosses who would have been concerned about what others might think, but this one is pretty cool about the whole thing. She even promoted me earlier this year. :)

But I still feel guilty when I check my schedule to see if sleeping in is a possibility the next day...

(who has no meetings at all tomorrow :) )
