The first level spells in the PHB aren't all that great, I'll give you that. But after that, I have a serious hard time narrowing down what I want from all the choices. Add in the Spell Compendium and there are some really cool spells for Bards.

Again, hosed at low levels, thank you for commenting.

Second, yet another book I have to buy if I want my bard to not suck. On another thread I calculated this as several hundred dollars. You know, I can play another class just as well for a lot less.

I am at least commenting in a productive manner.

Yeah, Firebug is stealing my schtick. I am the LEAST PRODUCTIVE COMMENTATOR on ENWorld, and I DO NOT APPRECIATE people STEALING MY SCHTICK.

Only if you count the spell compendium as an extra book (counting towards $100+) instead of what it was meant to be - a single book with all the spells contained in the splat books (and some from other sources) - so for a relative pitance one could get what 5+ books worth of spells.

Realizing of course that the spells from the core books are contained for free in the SRD.

What's the breakdown on the several hundred dollars? I keep coming up with "zero," that being the cost of the SRD, but I guess I could see getting up to $20 for a copy of Complete Adventurer from e-Bay. Still, I rather like Bards, and am curious which books are so good that even you would like a Bard if these books were taken into account.

No they aren't. The Bard is fine at low levels in fact I've yet to see a Bard die before level 6 and I can't say that for any other class. But Bards are tough to play and some people just are not up to the challenge.

The bardic spells in 3e sucks donkey balls.

Explain, please? Summon spells, Cure spells, Darkness, Silence, Sculpt Sound, Glitterdust, Invisibility, the Remove spells...they have all kinds of useful spells to choose from.
