IA: A Teacher for Laynie

But that explains the disguise

"Actually, that isn't quite the only reason. Kitty was visiting her parents today, so she won't be there, and I think Alden doesn't know that, so I was also hoping that Kitty would be seen riding away with you. Ooo, wouldn't that be fun!" Elektra laughs.

I think you look quite elegant when you're yourself

"You're sweet to say that, but I know I'm not that pretty. My hair is just a bland tangly brown, and I must seem almost underdeveloped compared to Kitty...Why are there so few people who can combine brains and beauty? And when they do, they are usually deficient in something else. Do you ever feel like the gods only have so much talent and merit to grant each person, and that for every gift they give us, we have an equal but opposite deficiency?"

Love the perfume too.

"Oh, that? It's a little spell I made. Mostly just an illusion, but isn't that what perfume really is, anyway? It seems to me like even girls who don't know magic try their best to cloak themselves in illusion before a date..."

"Aye, I figured that too," Vanitri says with a chuckle. "You trying to get me in trouble?"

"Don't sell yourself short. You're a woman in your own right, and anyone who doesn't see that isn't looking at you right."

"Perhaps, but that's likely why relationships are so complicated. The 'folk don't have any illusions 'bout them. Things come and go, and trying to hide or mask them only makes it harder."

"You trying to get me in trouble?"

"Well, it won't get you in trouble, though hopefully it will make Alden mad. Don't worry, if he tries anything against you, I'll curse him and he'll just make a fool of himself."

"Don't sell yourself short. You're a woman in your own right, and anyone who doesn't see that isn't looking at you right."

"Well, they know I'm a woman, well except the people who just see 'the student who takes lots of classes', but I'm not very pretty compared to the others at the school. It doesn't help that we have some real lookers in the past few years."

"Perhaps, but that's likely why relationships are so complicated. The 'folk don't have any illusions 'bout them. Things come and go, and trying to hide or mask them only makes it harder."

"The Freefolk don't like illusions? I find that hard to believe. The dancing shadows flickering from a shadow spell and the fanciful imagery of the phantasms seem like they would be right at home. Besides, if you don't like Illusions, why did you come to Daryne? I don't take you for an Evocation type, I guess."

Vanitri chuckles and lets that go.

"It's an attitude as much as anything else. With just a little work, and some confidence in yourself, you'll have men drooling all over ya in no time."

"I never said they don't like illusions, they just aren't sticklers to illusions 'bout relationships. Things change, people move on, and no one pays it much mind. Far as I know, I never met my parents, but I have a family, even someone I'd call a sister. Sure the faces and names of my family might change, but they're family. As for Illusions, I guess you've never seen the dance of shadows, nor met a 'folk wizard. Illusions, they're a part of life, just not of relationshonships."

"If by a little work you mean Enchantment or Illusions spells, then you're right," Elektra winks, "Of course, I don't feel it right to use Enchantment spells to get love. It isn't real that way. Have you ever had your mind controlled, held thrall by Enchantment magics? I haven't, but I can guess what it might feel like..."

"Well, maybe not for men. But I'm sure Freefolk women love to dress themselves up, wrapped in a pretty dress with perfume and a bit of make-up, just like other women, no?"

"Nah, I mean just a little care for the hair, maybe adjusting what you wear a bit, learning what flatters you best, just little stuff. It doesn't take much, but it's mind over matter much as anything."

Vanitri chuckles, "It don't take much for anyone to want to dress up, but a 'folk woman wants to bed ya, she'll make no illusions about it. And it don't mean much more than a kiss and a smile the next mornin'"

"I don't know, Vanitri," Elektra shakes her head, "I'm pretty confident in my mind, but my matter is just drab. You know, usually I don't care too much about it though. If I just ignore romance and focus on my studies instead, I stop noticing. I guess is that what you mean? It sounds like a good idea."

"It don't take much for anyone to want to dress up, but a 'folk woman wants to bed ya, she'll make no illusions about it. And it don't mean much more than a kiss and a smile the next mornin'"

*Elektra crinkles her nose slightly.*

"That sounds a bit promiscuous, actually. Most girls around here value commitment and romance over something so brief and physical."

"Well, don't think your matter is drab, because from what I've seen, it's far from it, but hiding from it doesn't do you any good."

"Nothin wrong with that either, if that's what ye're lookin for, and if that's what a 'folk woman wants, that's what she'll look for. Just no illusions about anything more. So many woman I've seen try ta trap men with the illusion of more when that's not what they want. I'd rather ya be honest 'bout that from the start."

"Oh, don't lie to me just to make me feel better. I know I'm no Kitty Valdaryne, Vanitri. But I'm Elektra Planter, and I try to focus on my strong points usually...I'm sorry, I must be the most depressing date ever, aren't I? I apologise."

"Well, I'm not trying to trap you Vanitri, so you can trust me when I tell you that right now, I'm really not looking for either of those one way or the other. I'm too focused on my studies for something like that right now. Still, this dinner and dance was a nice little distraction.."

Vanitri puts his hand under Elektra's chin, and draws her into a tender kiss. "You've been a wonderful date. And all you can be is the best Elektra Planter you can be."

"I never thought you'd been trying to trap me. And nothing wrong with a little distraction now and then. Tis only my pleasure to oblige."
