James moves quickly as he shoots a bolt from his hand crossbow across the pit, but although his aim was good, the creature was on the move and was gone from the spot James had shot at.
Gorir rushes up the pathway, a warcry bellowing through the night, and the muckdweller before him looks up at the charging dwarf with fear in its little eyes. The creature darts to the side just as the mighty warhammer comes down, and Gorir hits nothing but air.
Thadius moves out of cover and onto the path, his morningstar coming down towards the closest creature but missing as the elusive reptile moves quickly to avoid being hit.
Traubon, not moving from his spot down the path, conjures forth a bolt of flame and it flies to one of the muckdwellers, scorching its head and burning away scaly flesh. With a shriek, the creature falls to the ground, unmoving as smoke wafts up from its blackened form.
Magdalena attempts to stop everyone from attacking and places herself between the dwarfs and two of the reptiles, trying to convey the message of peace as another bolt from James' hand crossbow flies over the pit, almost hitting the furthest muckdweller.
A cacophony of voices erupts from the reptilians, only barely understandable by Magdalena.
"Goblin spies!"
"Listen not!"
"No attack big ones!"
"Bwaaaah!"
"Run!"
Their actions as diverse as their outcries, there seems to be no order to the muckdwellers. One tries to escape to the river, moving over a small hill and out of sight, while two others attempt to gang up on Thadius, biting at his arms and legs. Moving away his leg, the first one snaps its jaws just inches from the tiefling's limb, while the other manages to sink its teeth into the arm Thadius lifted in defense.
The muckdweller that was attacked by Gorir makes a strange gurgling sound, moves his jaws as if chewing on something, then spits out a stream of water at the dwarfs eyes.
The last creature stands transfixed, torn between wanting to believe Magdalena but also staring at the unmoving, smoking corpse just a few feet away.
