After your ordeal with the rapids, you continue on...wetter and a little shaken up but mostly okay.

You continue on for another two days without much of an incident. Occasionally schools of quippers (fish that are about a foot long with razor sharp teeth) take an interest in you and follow you for a time. Sarith tells you he once saw such fish strip a slave of his flesh in less than a minute...you take this as a warning to keep out of their reach (they do sometimes leap out of the water to get at you), but you also are reminded of what Sarith is and what he has done with his life. Was that slave thrown to the quippers for entertainment?

The area you are moving through is a series of deep narrow channels. They are typically 20 to 30 feet wide. The walls are solid mostly smooth rock that climb into the darkness above you. Occasionally the ceiling is low enough that those of you with more sensitive eyes catch glimpses of vaulted solid rock with outcrops and massive cracks with ancient darkness that defies your feeble light and even your keen eyes can't penetrate.

Another school of quippers begins to follow you, seeming to be hopeful that something meaty will drop into the water.

Erevan studies the quippers, and so does Glabbacat. After a moment, the cat familiar looks at the elf, who shakes his head in return.

"Not these fish," Erevan replies to the unspoken question. "Cats eat fish, yes, but these fish will eat cat if you give them a chance."

Obviously Glabbacat communicates telepathically, because almost immediately, the elf smiles and adds, "Yes, eating is the word for absorbing and taking into oneself. Only oozes eat without mouths."

Turning to Sarith, Erevan opens his mouth but hesitates. After a moment, he pushes on.

"So what happened before that slave got into the water with those fish?"

Ezraen looks back briefly, listening for an answer, but turns his gaze forward guiding the boat with his paddle.

Gods, I hope that this is not much further... the paladin half-prays, half-curses...

Sarith opens his mouth to reply then thinks better of it and just goes quiet. You continue on in silence for a few moments, hearing nothing but the lapping of the water against the boat and the occasional splash of the hungry predatory fish.

The silence is broken by Bertram suddenly crying out in horror. What he probably meant to say was "Surana! Behind you!" but all he got out was "SURA-ENTCLES-YOU...DUCK!!!". At just the last second he is able to warn you all. From a nearby outcropping of rock about a dozen slime coated tentacles, each at least 15' long and covered in spikes, are reaching down toward Surana. Bertram's warning comes just in time.

OOC:
Bertram and the creature tied on their stealth vs perception checks so I am ruling that it got very very close before he was able to spot it. It beat everyone's passive perception so had Bertram not spotted it, it surely would have surprised you all.

Roll init.

All NPCs roll a 10 + init. Many tie the creature. Odds they go before it, evens after [roll0]

The tentacle creature gets a 12.

Edit: So Bertram, Eldeth, Topsy and Sarith all go before it.

OOC:
Okay, so turn order is:

PCs: Surana and Ezraen

NPCs: Bertram, Eldeth, Topsy, Sarith

Monster

Erevan

Remaining NPCs: Derendil, Orsik, Shuushar

So SunGold DMAesh, you two are both up.

Surana turns to look over her shoulder just in time to see nearly a dozen tentacles reaching for her from a shadow just off to the left side of her boat. When her light falls on the creature it appears to be a gigantic floating brain (maybe 6' in diameter) with a beak. It is hovering in mid air.
