ICv2 has D&D in third place after Star Wars

They used to be one with something like 70-80% market share. Being number 3 reveals they have lost a huge %. At best they may have 30% but D&D has always been ahead by a large %. 2 years of no new product is actually a worse situation than the interruption caused by the TSR collapse and the WoTC buyout at least in terms of new product.

They had a 70% market share for a specific three month period when they released probably three to six titles during that period to actually sell. Why you would expect that 70% share to hold even when they have nothing on the market is beyond me.

Then you have to work out why they are not producing material and that is the kicker. 2 year break is basically unprecedented in 40 years.

Hmm? We all know exactly why they're not currently producing material. They haven't exactly been circumspect about it!

I'm surprised D&D is even up there, since all they're selling right now is one (bad) adventure. Did that many people really buy the Magic Item Compenium?

The number of sales is likely going to surprise some people by the actual smallness of it all...

But to repeat an earlier point, the 4e core books should be evergreen. The brand should not be resting entirely upon having to have a new release every month. Granted 2 years is a bit of a long stretch to have nothing in support , but the modules should be only a fraction of the total sales, I would think.

Except it's not...

I can tell you the announcement of a new addition KILLS sales of the older addition.

we (paradigm concepts) where selling spell decks in the 3.0 days.. sales where amazingly good... the day they announced 3.5 our sales plummeted.

same thing took place with Witch Hunter when we announced Witch Hunter 2nd Edition.... sales died... even at cons.

I would never buy a core book at full retail for a game which has announced a new addition, if I want it, just wait and get it from Toll's for 5 bucks later.

Same for us. 3E was announced shortly after we launched WotBS 3E. 5E was announced shortly after we launched Zeitgeist 4E. We had astonishingly bad timing... twice!
