I'd love to see Mystara 4e

I agree, but mainly for nostalgic purposes. I still have all my Gazateers from when I was growing up. However, the problem that Mystara has is a hook that makes it truly unique from the other campaign settings. Dark Sun has hooks aplenty, Eberron does too. Forgotten Realms has become the defacto generic setting for WotC.

Ironically the best nominee for a hook for Mystara is the Hollow World.

Yeah, Hollow World is really the only part of Mystara that has a unique offering, IMO. To me, both Mystara and Greyhawk are generic enough that they are interchangeable as campaigns (/ducks flying objects from Greyhawk and Mystara fans/enemies:heh:).

Mystara to me has always been three very unique settings: Mystara, Hollow World, and Red Steel.

Maybe a unique hook that would seperate it from the pack would lie in finding some way to integrate Mystara, Hollow World, and Red Steel into one unified campaign setting?:hmm:

Anyways, put me down as also being interested in seeing an updated Mystara (although, unless circumstances change in the future, I probably wouldn't buy it:( - for reasons best said in other threads:erm:).

I suppose the hook for Mystara could be about expansion and that would ring pretty true with its original concept.

Campaigns could be based on either being in the frontiers like Karameikos/Norwold or from an imperial war point of view between Thyatis and Alphatia.

As far as I'm concerned the modules dealing with these themes were among the most classic.

No other setting, that I am aware of, deals so heavily in those two themes. Plus it could open up ground for 4e rules much like Kingmaker will for Pathfinder, which by the way I am looking forward to greatly simply because it makes me think of Mystara.

It'd be tough I think. I'd want to see as much detail on each Mystara country as say, each nation in Eberron. It's about the same number, give or take...but then you add on Sind/Red Steel and the Hollow World? You'd either water it down or leave something out.

But I'd think that Hollow World could be pretty fun.

Why does the setting as whole need a hook? The biggest draw of settings like Mystara is the ability to customize them with personal hooks without having to stomp all over established canon.

Because there's no other reason to buy into a setting that looks like bland fantasy without a compelling hook.

If you want a fantasy setting that allows you to customize without stomping over established canon, I point you to the PHB, DMG, and MM. There's nothing there that doesn't preclude doing the Known World. In fact, it strikes me as pretty known world already.

Mystara is not bland. There are all sorts of things to criticize Mystara for... Lack of coherence, lack of seriousness, lack of any direction whatsoever, etc. However, blandness is not one of them.

Or at least that's what the samuraii cat-man from the invisible second moon said to the French werewolf-prince-wizard while flying on the gigantic airship during their quest to find the magic-suckig nuclear reactor buried somewhere under fantasy-Venice.

Was his name Meowa Kittycata by chance?;)

(Just joking, Rakastas are one of my favorite races. And, credit where credit is due - not my joke - stolen from an old Dragon article.)

:o

Love Mystara - big fan, so of course an official 4e version would be much appreciated... that's why it's sad to have to come to the realization that it's not gonna happen...

...oh well.
I agree. Once you change the original statement to being "official" (it may have been the original intent, but that's not how it was stated). Given they stated they went with Dark Sun because they felt they had covered "generic fantasy" with Forgotten Realms and Eberron!?! then Mystara has no chance.

Indeed, I don't see where they could be going in 2011 for a setting.
