D&D 5E (2024) If D&D 2024 Had Been Radically Different, Would You Have Stuck With 5E

Thinking about it, I don't want another version of D&D. If I run it again I'll go with 2014 without feats and level 1-3 like a long extended funnel with backup characters.

Probably not. Overall, I like many things about 5e
I may be trying to run a short session of D&D (the first time running anything since before COVID). If I do, I am going to use 2014 and, maybe, borrow a few things from 2024 that people revealed in reviews of various classes. While I like some 2024 changes, among my main reasons for not using 2024 are

• disliking the some of the changes to specific base classes;
• every class getting their subclass at level 3;
• and my dislike for even more subclasses included in the 2024 PHB than the 2016 PHB.

One other area I think WOTC dropped the ball with 2024 was not splitting culture from species as was done in Tales of the Valiant.
So, overall, I would rather just have a version with those issues (for me) addressed which is not as drastic as a radically different system.

First I love to go against the rules, so I picked up "it depends"
The real reason is that is too difficult to answer to this question. A new edition in the path of 5E but improving sone issues without changing the game into something radically different (as the 3E -> 4E change) could be interesting. A radical change that turn upside down the game won't interest me. Then there are an infinite number of options in the beteen. So, "it depends".

I'm not entirely sure what this poll is intended to prove, but I voted the second option.

I would have checked it out. I checked out 4e when it came out and decided it wasn't for me, I checked out D&D 2024 and decided to stick with 5e for the moment at least, although I've stolen some of the bits I like as house rules. Obviously there's some complications if you have a game already running in the previous system, but nothing insurmountable.

I’ve been through every edition of D&D, and 5e, although not perfect, is by far the best. I wouldn’t consider it worth checking out a significantly different version. Especially since I’m bored with D&D’s generic fantasy, and long for other genres in my role play. It’s only liking the ruleset that keeps me in the D&D camp.

I wouldn’t “stay with 5e” if it ceased to be supported though, I wouldn’t look for a space opera or supers ruleset that suited me.

so basically they do not want 2024 because it is the same and they do not want anything else because it is different and they need to learn new rules… sounds like you are stuck

More or less but 2 out of 4 were happy enough to move to 2024 and the rest followed. If they had not, I would have moved to the new monsters and encounter design anyway. Since I think the versions are pretty compatible, I would allow a mixed table with players using different character versions.

The poll assumes D&D is the only alternative. My group left the D&D fold when 4e came out. Switched to Pathfinder and others instead and so far we haven't looked back. So the selection is.... the non existing answer 6.
