If I had the money to buy two d20 accessory books, and all I had was srd (and msrd) materials, what what you suggest?

There's just too much for a poll, sorry.

As you said there are just too many books and too manyt differnet types of campaigns. I'd probalby get a campaign book for the world the game was to be played in, and then a general book that can be used by all players like Feats.

are you a player or a DM?

As a Player I'd definitely consider the Players Handbook and then a Complete ... book to complement whatever kinds of characters you tend to play.

If you are a DM, I'd consider the DMG and the Monster Manual. Yeah you have the SRD, but there are things not in the SRD in the books.

Assume I have Player's Handbook, Monster Manual, and DMG. I play and DM. However............... I am curious. Are there any good books specifically centered on world building?

yes, but not any sort of fantasy world. There is A Magical Medieval Society: Western Europe which is great if you want a fantasy like version of western europe. REally, with all the campaign books, and other source books that have come out, gererating your own world has been a subject barely touched.

For World-Building, the 2E World Builder's Guidebook is still an excellent resource.

For d20, there's Gygax's World Builder, but that title's a bit of a misnomer as it lists potential things to put in your world, but doesn't tell you how to do it. :)

As for your initial question, if I could buy only 2 accessories, I'd suggest:

Book of Vile Darkness (WotC, DM only)
Draconomicon (WotC, DM only)

For a player:
Arms and Armor 3.5 (Bastion Press)
Battlebox (Fiery Dragon Productions)

Best book on world building for D&D, hands down, is the 2nd ed World Builders Guidebook, which I'm kind of (forlornly) hoping the DMG II will retread.

In terms of the best investments to enrich what you have for homebrew ... Assuming 3.5 and that you aren't looking for a setting I'd buy the "Advanced" series from Green Ronin, of which the Bestiary is currently the only one out.

If you're looking for a setting, then the Iron Kingdoms books or Eberron are currently my favourites.

Monster books - Monsternomicon, the WotC Monster Manuals II and III

Magic books - Book of Eldritch Might

If you're looking for something in between (interesting rules tweaks and some new setting stuff) then Arcana Evolved (the new edition of Arcana Unearthed) would be a good bet.

Pure rules tweak books: Unearthed Arcana, Grim Tales

I'd pass on Monsternomicion. Get ToH and/or ToH2. They are truly great monster books.

If you'd like a cohesive panethon and you enjoy the PHB types, get the following from GR and WotC:

Book of the Righteous (BEST way to make up churches and other things), The Unholy Player's Guide book, Book of Fiends III, and Unearthed Arcana.

For planar stuff:

Beyond Countless Doorways and Portals and Planes.

For making cool characters:

Book of Iron Might
Book of the Righteous
The Complete Book of Eldritch Might

Course if you want a truly awesome campaign setting, look no further than the Scarred Lands! :)

SLCS: Ghelspad and the Divine and the Defeated.
These are a few of my favorite things.

Two hardbacks? Because you could get more paperbacks and even more PDFs for the same amount of money...OK, I'll take off the rules-lawyer hat.

Just because I'm super pimping this book, I'd suggest the Book of Iron Might from Malhavoc, for the maneuver and stunt rules. That's if and only if the current combat options aren't enough for you, though, and is probably better used by a DM with some experience.

If you don't want to create your own setting, then a setting book would probably be useful, but the choice of setting is going to be greatly dependent on what you like. Dark fantasy? One of the Scarred Lands books or Midnight. Heroic action? Eberron might be more your speed.

And if you want to do something other than fantasy, get Mutants and Masterminds, which is probably the best superhero system on the market.

But really, it boils down to individual preference. You don't need anything beyond the SRD, assuming you're willing to wing it on character creation and XP awards. In fact, if you're operating off of the SRD, you might find it most useful to buy the PHB and MM to have hardcopy - I know I prefer that to reading the stuff online, and it makes using the stuff during the game a lot easier. Oh, wait - I see you have the corebooks, so you can ignore that.

Anyway, the best (?) thing that you can ask for in a book is that it makes you want to alter your campaign so you can use it - but the books that do that are going to be different for every person. Your best bet is to look through lots of books and see which ones inspire you.
