IG & OOG: How do you deal with no-show players?

We've got about six players in our group and a scheduled play-time of every other saturday. With the size of our group its inevitable that every now and then someone is not going to make it.

The expectation in our group is that if you aren't going to be able to make it that you get a copy of your character to another player who will play your PC that session and your PC will gain half XP.

If someone unexpectedly can't make it at the last minute their PC usually just fades into the background, but that's only happend 2-3 times in the 4 years most of us have been playing together.

Character fades into the background or (if possible) find some in game reason they aren't around (i.e. taking care of other obligations, teleport away, etc.). Character gains no experience at all but isn't in any danger (i.e. isn't on the battlefield even if faded into the background). My players aren't keen on letting other players run their characters, so this works well enough.

i let the player decide.

if the player wants to earn xps then either another player can run the PC or me.

if they don't want to risk getting their PC killed. they fade into the background. beg off doing any dangerous activity and become a guard for the mounts or campsite, etc...
