I'm new to Angel, but wtf?

Hey, I've been watching Angel on TNT in the afternoon, and today they
killed off Doyle! Why the heck did that happen? Was there some problem with the actor or was he supposed to die from the beginning?

I figure someone better-acquainted with the show could satisfy my curiosity/disappointment. Thanks!

Drugs.

Appearantly it was causing problems and Whedon just
decided to kick him off rather than try to send him to
rehab or such and deal with his problem further down
the line. It all went down rather quietly and the details
only first came out when the actor died.

Wow. Well that certainly clears things up. Thank you both for enlightening me. Too bad, I really liked the character.

And yeah, I got into both Buffy and Angel late. I started with Buffy whenever they began running it on FX, and then with Angel now that it's running on TNT. I like catching a show from the very beginning, I've got OCD that way.

Whedon's said that he had some Martyr plans for Doyle
in the future, but not for quite some time.

(Maybe it's better to say I've heard that he said that
since I've never actually seen those comments myself).

Well maybe he was just moving up the time table. I mean he some times does that.

I'm almost positive that I read that Joss planned on killing off Doyle before the end of season one all along. He did the same thing with Buffy season 1
when he killed of the principal
so there is some precedent.
