D&D 4E I'm not gonna do 4E

Actually, the rules compendium announcement was the very things that made me go from on the fence to a staunch believer that 4e is coming and soon. It's the kind of thing that a company releases when they want to wrap up a system. Production cost is relatively low (no money spent on writers, developers, playtesters, etc, only a few editors), generally sells well (giving the company an influx of cash just before doing a large print run for the new editions), fills a slot in the produciton calender (so the line doesn't look "dead"), and it gives the players a sense of completeness (knowing the rules are not going to change anymore from this point forward and they can just refer to a single book instead of flipping through 5 books).

I'm might not going to buy 4e (plenty satisfied with 3.5, but we'll see). I'm definitely not going to buy any books of 4e if there's no OGL.

I'm pretty much done with Wizards. I haven't liked most of the 3.5 books. Hell, if I had been able to convene a group in my area with 1st edition, I wouldn't have bothered switching to d20 at all.

whether you like it or not

The signs will not be denied. The fact that the compendium is one of the few (or only?) really crunchy, general interest, books on the schedule for the end of this year-begining of next year, is one of them.

I wonder though if 4e will be designed not to completely invalidate everything you own. We're already on like the third round of some things in this edition alone (Defenders of the Faith, Complete Divine, Complete Champion, Tome & Blood, Complete Arcane, Complete Mage, etc, etc, etc...). I think you would be hard pressed to find anyone who has enough juice left to go more than one more round.

If 4e does come out, and I am kind of hoping it doesn't, then I think they should focus on the core and the campaign settings. Setting books are the one thing that can keep on being new no matter how many editions there are.

I'm ready – 4th edition me!

Here's hoping for:

-Designed around "per encounter" instead of this assumed "4 encounters a day" malarkey.
-A complete reworking of the antiquated, pseudo Vancian, Gygaxian magic system holdover.
-No more skill ranks.

Basically, a lot of the changes they made in Saga I wouldn't mind seeing come D&D's way, which in my campaign they already have.

I'm sure it will be. Easy compatibility between editions is bad for sales and the overall health of the product line. Wizards will want folks to want to buy new books, because the new ones are hopefully so darn cool.

3/3, that's a formula for a non-sale from me.

In order to get me to purchase 4e, WotC would have to do all of the following:

(1) Make a game that's markedly superior to my houseruled 3.X.

(2) Make that game OGL, with an SRD.

and

(3) Restore Dungeon and Dragon magazines to a print format.

:D

Yeah, I grab 4e when it comes out. If it looks good, I'll even play it. I mean, at the current rate of approximately one edition per decade (3.0 to 3.5 was hardly a new edition). Its not like its changing overnight. Now, if I play it will depend on whether I feel its well done or not. . . and if I can get others to agree. That'll take a bit of time even after it comes out. But frankly, there isn't a whole lot more they can squeeze out of 3.5 that'll be worth the money to print, so I doubt it'll be more than a year, maybe a year and a half before an official announcement is made. I also agree that the whole rules compendium looks more like a wrap-up than a sign of continued vigor of the 3.5 line

As with all the previous changes, some will stick with their favorite version, some will switch to the new version. But I highly doubt WotC is just going to wash their hands and call it a day with the end of 3.5. Change is the way of things, folks, but it doesn't mean our 3.5 books are going to combust.

But pretty much I'm going to wait and see for myself when it happens.

I'll buy it. Then again, I buy game books all the time. Another $100 here or there isn't going to affect me much. Instead of buying the next 3.5 book I'll be buying the next 4.0 book. It's all the same to me.
