D&D 4E I'm not gonna do 4E

There are 62 hardcovers for 3.5 on my shelf.

I'll be blunt: most of them have not been read other than in passing - and only a few have been read cover to cover.

Most importantly, the majority of these books have been purchased within the past 18 months.

That offers the most powerful reasons I have to explain why neither I nor my gaming group will be switching to 4E for many years.

What would the consequence of that be to us? No longer having our version of the game that we run be currently supported in the pages of Dragon or Dungeon? ;) Sorry - that arrow (and it was a good one) has now left their quiver.

A release of 4E at this point will only serve to make remaining stock of 3.5 cheap and plentiful. I'll happily buy such stock up as it becomes available and consider 4E in about five years' time.

I'm really happy with 3.5, I have a ton of money invested in it, and have been playing it for a long time. I don't care about 4E. I'm sure it will be awesome and really cool, but I don't think I'm going to spend 100 + dollars on it when I already have a great game.

Anyone else with me?

I'm with you! I'm really happy with the '81 edition.

I don't think I'll be purchasing the 4th edition either. My group and I are happier with C&C than D&D 3.5 for this particular gaming itch, everyone's invested in both a PHB and M&T book. Also I have a ton of 3.5 books that I can convert and scrounge for C&C. So as far as I see it I've got my game and I find that it meets my requirements...fast, easily grasped rules, fun. and minimum cost. I'm also finding it to be quite fun converting what I want from 3.5 or making up my own stuff...without having to know a boatload of rules.

Suddenly it's the year 1999 again.

I'm really cautious about saying that I will or won't switch; if there's one thing that the launch of 3e taught me, it's that vocally resisting change before anyone knows what that change entails will probably make you feel foolish in the long run. I also learned that it's impossible to judge the whole from leaked reports of the parts.

I'll buy it if it's a better game. The fact that it's the next edition of Dungeons & Dragons doesn't mean anything to me one way or the other.

If the Star Wars Saga rules play half as good as they look, and D&D 4e adopts most of their concepts for fantasy, then I'll definitely buy it and play it a lot more than I have D&D 3.5.

If Wizards puts together a system even better than SWS, I'll certainly pick it up.

If D&D 4e is largely unchanged, regresses toward previous editions, or goes in a direction I dislike, I'll skip it unless it comes out with a particularly spiffy signature setting.

Me neither, I'm with you on that.

No more switching editions...again. No more spending tons of money on 4E only to watch 5E roll along.

I don't understand what is it about D&D that needs to warrant a 4E in the first place and no one here probably cannot give a good explanation. Take what there is with 3.5E and simply IMPROVE on it.

4E means they're going to change ALOT of things around. So say goodbye to ALOT of those sacred cows out there. That's all 4E is going to do to be fresh. Kill the "sacred cows" of D&D.

What else can they do?

1) All races can be any class? Check.
2) Multiclassing balanced out? Check.
3) Transformed "Kits" into "Prestige Classes"? Check.
4) Streamlined the XP and leveling system? Check.
5) Kept the other sacred cows like HP, Vancian magic, ability scores, etc.? Check.

The list goes on. What can 4E do but destroy D&D?

Seriously, think about it folks. 4E warrants a HUGE change, like 3E was to 2E, right? Well what more can you do in 4E that will make it so vastly different and improved than 3E...without destroying its "sacred cows"?

I hear ya! I complained about 3e endlessly. Cyclic initiative?! That'll just stupid! *hangs head in shame*
