Immortals Handbook - Epic Bestiary (Epic Monster Discussion)

I'd specify in the text that aging in this manner does not bestow mental benefits, but does provide physical penalties, and prevents a character from ever being raised if they die of old age. There's no save, so I guess every 1d4 rounds is okay... if you were to consider offering a save, I'd make it usable every round.

Given that the plutonium is enough to go supercritical simply by being put together, perhaps if the golem were to enter a dead-magic area it'd also explode? Golems are clearly able to exist within antimagic, but dead magic might cause problems, don't you think?

And the saves are more appropriate for something with less than half its CR. If you want it to be a credible threat and not just a time bomb, that needs boosting, badly.

Meh, what can I say; Golems were never very good at making saves. (They are immune to magic; But it seems a tanglefoot bag defeats the quite easily)

Yea, I forgot about Bonus construct HD due to VSCs. And the BAB was wrong in BOTH. :( This is probably due to me throwing together a bunch of undead earlier. :)

And yes, it has low HP. Very low actually. I think I'll give it D20s and Max HP, and bump the CR up by 2. Call it Unearthly Construction. That should Triple its HP. (Still low, but hey, that just means you get to the "big kaboom" faster :))

Thanks for the info. :)

I based the CR off some earlier numbers: Construct HD were listed as .55 / HD. I gave +1 CR for each ability I though was Divine, and +6 for the Meltdown (Cosmic).

Version 5: Mindless Construct 0.35/HD.

Version 6: Silver Rule* = 0.85 (5/6ths) final calculated ECL after Golden Rule.

*Instead of simply -3 for (epic) creatures with an ECL above 20.

Though I think I know where I erred: I gave the Meltdown a +6 worth when it should have been +12. :)

I also didn't know how much to increase the CR by for the area of the Meltdown, Since I set it at *Long* range. (I wanted a catastrophicly huge explosion :), I mean, its a walking 8 foot Hulk of explosive matter, it better darn explode nasty. :)

Well it would only be +6 for the Meltdown itself, however, the reason its broken is because you are putting a cosmic ability on a monster which shouldn't necessarily be able to support one.

That said if we make it 30 HD and give it d20s, then it does parallel a demigod slightly so we can possibly get away with using Meltdown.

So, unless I got the HD Cr wrong, It looks more like a CR 29-30. (Before Gold/Silver rule, but since a HD modifier of .55 is 15.95, they don't seem to matter. I agree though that its powers are much deadlier than it's Hit-Dice)

The HD modifier for.35 = 10.5 so everything after 21 should be halved, and following that, multiply by 0.85 to get the final ECL of which CR is 2/3rds.

Yea, I was thinking about having a power based on radioactive decay. (The mechanic I had in mind was weak; The golem would gain negative levels over time. More of a penalty than a power) Ageing foes could work. (Perhaps as "blood" effect? Damageing the golem releases super-deadly radiation?)

I juat always like trying to give a monster an original power or at the very least an original 'twist' to an existing power.

Quite so. And in a universe with tech weapons there are also grenades and bombs to consider- and of course, spells that don't allow SR (like many Acid spells and the Orbs, though the latter don't allow saves either).

Sounds like a Good Idea- that makes it a Divine-level analogue of the Orichalcum and Neutronium constructs (those being Cosmic and Transcendent, respectively).

And regarding your previous post, yes version 5 of the "Challenging Challenge Ratings" document exists; AFAIK it's the one that was included in Grim Tales. Several of us who regularly read these threads have it, I believe, including myself. If UK didn't email you a copy based on your personally-directed message in that previous post, I'd be happy to do so.

Wait, doesn't the Meltdown ability specifically parallel Perfect Atomic Immolation? That would be four total Cosmics, wouldn't it, and thus +24?

Actually, I went with greater. (Rank 2. I wanted the immolation to have a 1:1 Ratio.)

Which brings a minor issue with Atomic effect: all the powers are easy to figure out except the poison. (It always comes out to weird fractional numbers. And the formula is unclear; I think I got it, but since it comes out so weird I cant be certain)

Poison = 1/2 HD then divide by 3 (for Str, Dex & Con).

My example in Ascension may be slightly wrong. In fact I am really going to have to go over Atomic Effect and make it simpler - I just looked over it and even I was having trouble working it out. :o
