Impossible to kill a spectra?

Well in order to attack them, at least a hand and/or arm has to get exposed...which is probably enough to target spells.

That if it just touched them under there feet's. If the pc's aren't flying that is possible.

Re: it still doesn?t make sense

Come on now it?s a Cr 7 monster. It can?t be true that the pc?s need a 72K+ weapon to defeat it.

In fact, that's one of the more useless weapons I've ever seen, since most incorporeal creatures are undead...

How can a party of six 8th level pc?s ever defeat a spectra?

Remember that as long as its eyes are inside solid matter, it can't see... so it suffers a 50% miss chance on all attacks and has to choose the square it attacks without knowing where people are.

As soon as it attacks - pushing an arm out of the floor - or pops its head up to take a look, it no longer has full cover, and all the readied actions go off for Turn attempts, flasks of holy water, Cure Serious Wounds spells, Magic Missiles, etc.

I just looked at the spectra, I?m thinking of releasing it on my players soon.
But then I tried to think of a way for them to ?kill? it. If I?m correct it is not possible to kill it at all.
If the spectra just stay in the floor and attack the Pc?s from beneath it is not possible for the pc?s to kill it in anyway.
Thy cant turn it because it has total cover, thy cant hit it with any weapon because it?s inside a massive rock.

Am I missing something her?

Do you mean a "Spectre", or something else?

If the spectre stays in the floor, it can't see or attack the PC's. If it has total cover from them, they have total concealment from it.

All they have to do is walk away from it, and it will have to stick it's head out of the floor to see where to go. At that point, they attack, turn, etc.

It has the Blindfight feat reducing the miss chance. It has a descent listen check +13 so pinpointing where the noisy full plate wearing fighters is should be no problem.

Most spectra?s has been around for many hundred years, so waiting a little time inside the floor should be no problem for it.
It don?t need to come up until the pc?s drop there defense.

Blind-fight won't help you through a solid floor.

When you are in a solid floor, you can't hear anything. Listen checks are irrelevent. It would need Tremorsense.

How does it know the PC's have dropped their defense?

Not every Spectre has centuries of experience. The ones who do probably have class levels are are indead bad-asses.

The standard spectre in the MM is not one with centuries of experience. It's the weakest, most common example of a spectre. (See the MM, page 12, Advancement.)

That's true, but it still needs to choose its square.

Through a solid floor!?

As long as there's an animal around, the PCs will know when it's within 30 ft.

That's why miners used to take canaries down mineshafts with them - if the canary freaked out, they knew there was a spectre nearby.

I'm goig to disagree with you there.

The spectre with its head in a solid floor is effectively blind. The characters are treated as invisible. 50% miss chance. That's what Blind-Fight's all about.

It doesn't help him target the right sqaure, but it helps him with the miss chance if he guesses right.

Blind fight isn't a supernatural ability.

For blind-fight to work, you have to have some alternate means of sensing your opponent. If you are inside the floor, you can't hear, feel, or smell their presence.

I just don't think that blind fight would work in those circumstances, similar to the way that blind fight won't help against somone who is blinking .
