Miyazaki's Mononoke-hime, or as it's called in the English version, Princess Mononoke. Good for inspiring OA stuff as well as perhaps giving ideas for how to use some of the templates...

F.W. Murnau's Faust, silent film, 1926, for an entertaining medieval romp regarding an alchemist's deal with Mephisto gone wrong...and tragic. What goes down when a Celestial and a Fiend make a bet.

Funny no one's mentioned HBO's Rome series, if not for a depiction on how European multi-deity pantheons are worshipped and their place in society. Good inspiration on how to portray urban factions, and the ugly things that aristocratic women get themselves into.

Then I’d point out that:
First, it was actually called Robin of Sherwood
Second, it was not produced by the BBC

The show was groundbreaking for many reasons among which are:
It was the first to include a foreign, Moslem, character as a member of Robin’s band.
It was the first to make Will Scarlet a psychopath, not a dandy.
It incorporated a degree of mysticism and magic into the legends, with evil sorcerers, and Herne the Hunter, forest god/druid.
It had the most gorgeous Marion ever (this last is of course, subjective, and probably relates to my age when I saw the series for the first time).
