Integrating an Experienced Player with Newbies

You might simply want to give the players a chance to re-do the characters. Obviously you would want them to stick with stuff that had made for important RP points, but a chance to rework the characters now that they know what they really want to be doing with them and now that they have a better idea what works. Would likely improve the effectiveness of everyone significantly. If it's been two years, then enough stuff has come out and enough stuff has changed (like the creation of the MT class), that it would straighten out the kinks.

I agree with several points made so far. Best approach...discuss this issue with the veteran and see if he has any suggestions or input. Two heads are better than one, and discussion is the best way to bring this issue to light and resolve it.

I like another suggestion as well. If the players wish, give everyone a fresh start with new 1st-level characters in an exciting new campaign thread. I know my players delight in getting to try something new. That's not to say they can't return to the old characters at a later time (if they wish).

In addition, allow them to explore new options such as prestige classes in advance (if you have the sourcebooks) so that they have something to shoot for. To add flavor, you may also considering adding elements you may not tried before (Psionics, new classes from the complete books, new races, etc.) This will give YOU are chance to dip your creative resources into something totally new as well.
