Pathfinder 1E [INTEREST/RECRUIT] - Crowns of Ice

Sure thing! The only reason I won't bring you in now is because we have some very extensive backstories and they are all intertwined. But there is plenty of space for more. I'll include you in the shared folder of the doc we've assembled for the game, so you can plan a character and make your contributions!

The thread is up! So far I've placed a welcome post, but tomorrow you'll have the very first game post! I've taken my time because I needed to consider npc's, scenario (Grandael and the coastal area), some political issues, and so on. I've also returned to some of the source material (the edda, history books) and the novels that inspired the idea (Game of Thrones mainly) in order to understand some pitfalls that led the story to a halt at some points (and avoid them all throughout our campaign).

Hey AB,

Saw the intro thread of ours, and unfortunately I'm a little ... confused as to what is going on, to be honest.

Astrid and Alec are traveling to the wedding of Einar and Astrid. They are intercepted by Thorir and Eben ... But then you mention a secret meeting? What meeting?

Thorir and Eben are vikingr trying to capture Astrid to hold for ransom (they don't know who the bride was prior to this, just that Einar's bride was on the way to Grandael), and they certainly did not count on her father also being present. Even if they did, Alec is a powerful Jarl and Spellcaster, I can't imagine he'd be quite happy about brigands trying to capture his ship and daughter. I also can't imagine the MacTiers would willingly travel with the Volundson boys.

I'm a little lost on how we got here and what reasoning our PCs would have at the moment for not just fighting it out. Did you have an explanation or plan for this, or can we roll it back to the actual encounter on the sea after Eben and Thorir have boarded the MacTier's ship? As our backstories and intentions currently stand, both groups literally have no reason to work with or trust one another.

I'll re-post. I actually thought you guys would start after the capture, from what I had read in all backstories and discussions. No problem, though! I'll make the necessary arrangements!

Word mate, I think maybe we were all not clear on where precisely we assumed the party would be starting and all had like different ideas of where we are and what's going on.

Maaaybe might be good for us to come together OOC quick and figure this out?

Works for me. As far as I know, right now Alec is being pressured to marry, Astrid has decided to give in to that pressure, and Astrid has left. I suppose it would make sense for Alec to go with her, as he would be there for her marriage. But if they're waylayed by vikings, yeah, Alec's gonna be taking some heads. Plus the fact that he wouldn't travel without an honor guard. So it wouldn't be just Alec and Astrid.

So what we need is a reason to work together. A reason why Alec and Astrid need these other two. A common enemy, or some reason they have to work together. I've actually been left out of a lot of the plot development, so I don't really know what's going on at all.

Those are precisely the questions I placed on the reformed post, lol.

I think we can start by the conflict. No problem there. But there is some big potential for killing, as well. This, plus the previous discussions, is the reason I assumed you'd begin after the confrontation, collecting the dead and trying to parley. But the shock would be rather interesting to roleplay as well!

So far, I left the thread open to Alec and Astrid, so you guys figure out the entourage you're taking. I was thinking I might do the same after you guys build your configuration with Thorir and Eben. Then we proceed to the boarding and we build the joining in-game.

All things considered, when Eben sees Astrid he won't be inclined to attack any longer, I think. Thorir might just listen to his brother, considering that, at the very least, she might be a bigger prize then first expected. As for Alec, all we gotta do is ask his opinion on this marriage, and I think that, after knowing Astrid loves Eben, he'd be more inclined to cooperate with the attackers.

Also, if we leave this to be roleplayed, there will be a reason for Alec to consider his options. Breaking the deal with Einar will fall on his back after all, but turning his back to Eben might be bad as well (considering the power Thorir and Eben now have). Even if we started after the conflict, these things would end up being considered. But with the confrontation this might aid some tension!

Here I thought a lot of this was hashed out between other players, annnnnd hindsight tells me a lot of this probably should have been done here instead. Mea Culpa, friends.

From what I know, here is the skinny.

- Thorir is a Sea King and also a son of Volund. The brother of Einar and half-brother of Eben, he has been raiding and adventuring to gain wealth and fame outside of Grandael because Einar is a bastard and has been consolidating power and basically preparing to eliminate any threats to his rule. I believe at some point Thorir wants to challenge Einar for rightful rule of Grandael but isn't strong or famous enough to do so now ..? Fenris, correct me if I'm wrong there.

- Eben is an actual bastard son of Volund, and Einar tried to have him killed when he went to go see dear old dad to try and become Legitimized. This lead to Thorir saving Eben, meeting his half-brother, and the two of them agreeing to work together to be a thorn in the side of Einar while also becoming legendary warriors and vikingr. Eben and Astrid used to have a relationship before he finally left the MacTier lands to fully join his half-brother, but was frightened away by a dark and mysterious Cult who told him that Alec would have him executed for seeing his daughter.

- Astrid was the victim of this cult, leading to her child (by Eben) to be taken by a strange, otherworldly creature that helped protect her. Her and her father have taken to trying to uncover this cult, find out its motives, and destroy it. She has agreed to marry Einar in the years since Eben left her, with both MacTiers assuming he would be a powerful ally in their hunt and also a means to strengthen their hold in The North.

- Alec is also hunting the Cult, knows that Astrid and Eben were involved with each other, and I would assume also thinks that Einar would make a powerful ally (despite the fact that Einar is Pantheonist and Alec is Demiurgist). I would also imagine that due to his own hesitancy in seeking a new wife since the passing of his, he ... may be conflicted over Astrid's wedding, knowing how long his daughter has put this off? I'm not entirely sure.

For Eben and Thorir, their common enemy is certainly Einar whom they know as a cruel, vicious, dangerously ambitious man. However, Einar appears to kind of be a good thing to House MacTier? Even though I'm pretty sure (OOC knowledge) he is not a good thing for them at all.

Alec and Astrid certainly know The Cult is their enemy and have been trying to hunt down and destroy these folks, and while Eben has encountered them, he didn't actually know it was them (the cultist was in the guise of a Demiurgist Priest at the time). I ... don't believe Thorir has had an encounter with the Cult either.

Aaaaaand AB basically posted all of this before I finished and said what I was getting to, lol. When Eben realizes it's the MacTiers and specifically that it is Astrid, he'd probably try to halt the violence by any means. I would think for the sake of roleplay and the story, while it will definitely be fun to portray the initial raid, the clash of shields, the call of spell ... we kinda sorta do need to not kill each other and work together.

The only thing I can think of is that if Thorir sees that Eben knows these people personally, and both of them know about Einar, they may try to convince the MacTiers that Einar is bad news and that their best interests may be in supporting a certain Sea King to replace him >.>

Or something like that.

Looking at the questions posed, I would assume that:

1) Yes, they are sailing together.
2) They are in one boat
and 3) i'd say they'd probably have at least 3 men with them, as a guarded escort. That doesn't include the ship's crew.
