D&D (2024) Intersection of skill & tool proficiencies

Books are sitting in a bit of an odd design space.

They give +5 to relevant study checks which sounds a lot like what advantage provides on passive checks.

I assume at some point they decided to remove all passive checks except perception from the PHB and then still had the books.

And then someone made that decision instead of providing regular advantage. Not entirely sure why.

Voice would count as an instrument, no?
Curious concept, declaring a part of one's body a tool. Opens up some odd ideas like tool proficiencies in Eyes, Hands, Ears, and so on.

Of course then, the DM gets to decide if proficiency in the use of one's hands is sufficient to grant a benefit when opening a lock over Thieves' Tools, and what happens if you had both.

I'd say that declaring a body part as a tool requires choosing which type of tool.

So Voice as an Musical Instrument or a Gaming Set.

Then we get the Warforged and Autognomes replacing body parts for specialized tasks- maybe Changelings and Plasmoids could get in on this too!
I could see intelligent assistant and apprentice constructs created by dwarves or gnomes having artisans tools in their arms and fingers.

Programmed with years of knowledge lets them roll with ADV due to proficiency in History and the tool.

I think it is fine for just breaking into a solo to be riskier than playing an instrument.

This is probably why Dance bards get adv. to performance checks when dancing to keep them on par with other bards who play.

So a character with the Performer skill and proficiency with a musical instrument gets advantage, but a singer with Performer skill just rolls normally.

Voice would count as an instrument, no?

My mother was a voice teacher before retiring (ie: she trained opera singers), and I’ve taken voice lessons at various times. So I can assure you that singers train and practice exactly the same way that instrumentalists do.

How you apply that in your game is, of course, up to you.

The really should stack and cancel on a 1-1 basis.
OR... they just keep adding dice. When you have advantage and disadvantage, you roll 3d20 and take the middle roll. :p

"Okay, you have 3 advantage and 2 disadvantage, so roll 6d20, and use the third highest die."
