Iron DM: format and philosophy

Quick note--

Don't mistake "criticism of the judge" for "Wulf being Wulf."

If you need reference, the link to the story hour is in my sig.

Folk, it was obvious to me that Wulf was merely indulging in some good-natured japing.

Wanna know how I know?

This is from his first tournament (and mine):

Hmmm... I was thinking along the same lines, rg, and then I just decided that the seemingly arbitrary nature of the Judge was one of the lynchpins of the whole Iron DM concept.

And I think that's kinda cool.

I guess given two entries of equal merit, nemm might lean one way or the other just on his personal preference for how they are structured, but I don't think that would persuade me to change my methods.

That said, I suppose I might have taken it the wrong way, if I hadn't enough knowledge of Wulf's character and/or preferences. However, in this case, the matter is resolved, and we don't need to bring it up again.

Hopefully, the question of whether or not the contestants should critique the judge or judgement can be made without specific inferences.

I for one love the exposition. Seeing how the heavy weights come up with there ideas, and lay the foundation for there excellent entries really helps the rest of us to improve our game.

I don't want to go into any specifics, and I don't know you from Adam, Wulf; all I know is that you wrote a couple very cool adventures, and that your criticisms of the judge (or your "Wulf being Wulf") was something that I really wouldn't want to have in any tournament I ran. In other words, if I ran a tournament and you entered, I'd ask you to keep that part of your personality in check for the thread in which the tournament ran -- and I'd not read any other thread in which you expressed that part of yourself, not while the tournament was running.

I *do* think that anything resembling critique of the judges or the judgements should be verboten during the tournament itself: it distracts from the tournament, and it makes the judge's already stressful job even more stressful. Further, such criticism could cause a judge to question his impartiality.

I don't think the folks we have judging here are skeezy enough to retaliate against someone who criticizes them. On the contrary, I'd be afraid they'd give more consideration than necessary to their critics, out of fear that they were being unduly influenced.

Again, I accept that you didn't mean your posts to come across as bitter harsh criticism. In future tournaments, I'd prefer that people err on the side of caution, and refrain from any second-guessing of the judges whatsoever in the tournament proper.

Precisely because I don't know you as well as I know Rune or nemm, it's safe to assume I would mind my manners in your thread. (I do have manners, it's true...)

I do want to say, on reflection, "Wulf being Wulf" isn't entirely honest. I did (and still do) have some legitimate questions about what the judges consider "a good adventure," but the snarky Wulf flavor was added in to poke a little fun at Rune/nemm. Because it made so many people uncomfortable, I wouldn't do it again.

Back a bit more on topic-- I am a fan of everything about the Iron DM tournaments here. I don't think anything needs changing-- I notice it is usually the "new" folks who propose changes. It takes a while to learn to appreciate the quirks of the system (even if it means consistently losing in round two or whoring yourself out...) ;)

Fair enough. And my apologies for was picking on your posts: I wasn't really clear on your friendship with Rune, I guess, and so from the outside it probably looked worse to me than it really was.

Please do not change anything about IRON DM. It has shown me, a player and DM since 1978, that I still have a lot to learn. I wish someone would've run a Home Game this time around. I am better able to participate in those than the real mccoy. Keep it up, folks.
