WinXP is less of a resource pig (or can be made that way if you turn off all the eye candy) but it's not cheap IIRC... :\

OSX runs fine on a G3 400 with 512MB ram (10.1 and 10.2). 10.3 requires more ram on that system - a full gig, but also run adequately.
