I think I've said something similar a few times...

3e's glory is the rules
2e's is the flavor/fluff/settings
1e's is the adventures

I find myself physically or mentally QFTing you a lot this week for some reason, Psion . . . :)

The really great thing is that it's possible to import the glories of 1st and 2nd into 3rd.

Gee, and here I was figuring that I was being an argumentative git at times this week.

Guess I'll have to do it more often. :)

Definitely my fave mechanics wise. As long as I stick to core rules, the patterned progession is easy to wrap my head around.

That said, I tend to go with 3rd party sources for the flavor and advacned rules (ie non-core). I'm not so kosher with the 3.5 changes or new books.

My two pesos.

I like all the options, the fact that it takes alot of the rules arbitration away from the DM and actually empowers the players...
Oof. Couldn't disagree with you more, on that one. Actually, I agree about 3E taking a lot of judgment out of the DM's hands, but I consider that a negative. Don't agree at all about empowering the players, though; I think it's the opposite.

2E had the best campaign settings (including expanding on those from prior editions).
1E had the best adventures and overall "feel".
OD&D had the best "right out of the box" playability factor.
Generally, agree, although I'm not a fan of what they did to Greyhawk in the 2E period.

Someone mentioned that you can import the earlier edition stuff (e.g. adventures) into 3E. Yeah, you can, but I think you lose the original "feel," which is part of their charm. 3E is a good game, but a quite different game, IMO.

You know - 1e may have the best adventures, but I think 3e may have the best campaign adventures...

Thank you Dungeon for the Age of Worms!

Cheers!

I am primarily playing in 3.5 at the moment. But the rules bloat has made creating adventures a pain and a great deal of unneeded complexity and requirements to know three score different variations of skill difficulties and skills rules exceptions that seem to not be balanced in a reasoned and practical way to me drive me crazy when I am having to deal with the mechanical aspect of adventure creation.

My favorite would definitely have to be Classic D&D (primarily the BECMI boxed sets of Mentzer and the condensed handiness of the Rules Cyclopedia).
