Is 4th edition getting soft? - edited for friendly content :)

But crits on spells, breath weapons, etc... no. And not because it's a "sacred cow". Dragon breath, for instance, at higher stages in the game, already do enough damage plenty of times to flame-broil a PC, and if that doesn't kill them, the massive damage save just might

Ah, but we don't know what breath weapon damage/effects will be like in 4th Ed.

Oh, and say bye-bye to that crap, cut & paste form 2nd edition Death from Massive Damage malarkey.

It just so happens that my group being the lovely collection of mature people it is, we all decided not to use save or die spells (DM or players) at the beginning of our current campaign (started two years ago).

Even save or suck (hideous laughter etc) are modified.

I wasn't aware that save-or-die mechanics were inherently immature.

Thanks for the heads up.

I thought you were going to say that 4e would have mixed ethnicity chaotic good paladins wearing rainbow armor and marrying gay druids who are hugging trees. So compared to that, no, I don't think it's becoming too liberal.

That was exactly what I was thinking when I saw the thread title... LOL

Although I did have a WTF moment when someone said he would not upgrade to 4th ed because of a real-life religious concern (about Asmodeus being a deity now)... I won't go into details here, for fear of moderator-smacking, but I'll just say that if you are concerned about one of the PCs in your table worshipping Asmodeus, how come you weren't concerned when they were worshipping Nerull or Hextor?

Now, back on topic, I welcome our new save-or-die-deleting overlords.

There is a world of difference. I would request you respect that other individual's personal feelings on the matter -- as opposed to being snide about it -- and maybe, if you are inclined, look into it so it is no longer a "WTF" issue for you.

First, because it pushes too many buttons on first glance, I altered the thread title.

Second, I wasn't too thrilled with the connotations the thread started out with, but Hobo convinced me with his post to let this stay open. I'll be brief; anyone who attempts to push this back into politics or makes snide political comments will get me swinging the banhammer post-haste.

Man, what a buzzkill.

;)

Although the information so far has me very much not liking 4E, I don't think we're yet able to say whether 4E will be the "creampuff edition". It looks like, among other things, the "Xtr3m3 3d1t10n", but that may or may not be a correct impression and isn't really relevant to lethality.

If I were to run 4E I would slightly miss save-or-die effects, but in all my years they've been a very small part of the game and their presence or absence doesn't really have much impact on lethality. Now, if they're removing petrification and Hold Person, etc., so that the only way to take someone out of combat is to grind down their HP, that's a different matter entirely. Then it would be the "creampuff edition" in my estimation, because you'd always know how far you are away from being defeated. The 150 HP Fighter should still have things to worry about, even at "full health".
