Is a Small Longsword type=slashing?

Arrowhawk

First Post
It's probably listed somewhere, but I can't seem to find it. If you have a Small sized longsword, does it still do Slashing?

If so, then can you use a Small Longsword, as a medium-sized creature, as a light weapon to basically get a slashing shortsword?

EDIT:
And yes, I get that the rules suggest a -2 penalty if a medium creature uses a Small longsword

Assuming you use 3.5 rules, then yes, still slashing. The weapon description table actually shows this, as it lists it as S (slashing) and has damage for medium and small sizes.

Yes. If it makes you feel any better, it's far more common that the poor halfling fighter has to deal with loot too big for him to use, than your situation.

If you found a REALLY nice small weapon and Magic Item Compendium is allowed, you could always just put the Sizing property on it. That lets you change the weapon's size to any other size as a swift action, unlimited use. Costs a flat amount (5000 gp, iirc), not a +1 enhancement value or whatever, so it won't make the weapon exponentially more expensive to upgrade later.

Lol. Talk about taking a 2 foot leap over a 10 foot ditch.

I don't feel anything. This hasn't come up in any game or any discussion. I'm not trying to circumvent anything. I'm just asking a question.

No need to be snide. Just sayin'.
You asked a question, got an answer, and the person who answered was kind enough to extrapolate. Just say thank you, and move on.

Insinuating I'm upset because I can't use some weapon is asinine. More so given the history and unprovoked attitude I frequently get from SoS. I've already invited SoS to put me on his ignore list.

Yes. If it makes you feel any better...
I read this as an expression of comparison, and not a comment on your emotional state.

I took your responses to be a comment on your emotional state.

on the topic of the OP, I second confirming the use with the -2 penalty, and the slashing damage as per RAW.

If I was DMing, I'd rule for the sake of simplicity, that it could also be treated as a dagger for a medium-sized character that dealt 1d6 slashing damage.

And you could be correct.

This speaks to why I asked the question. It's odd to me that a short sword can't be both piercing and slashing like a dagger.

Yeah, I hear you. I just did two quick google image search for the words "Longsword" and "Dagger", hoping to find a noticible difference between the tip of the blades. There was so much variety between the images that it was impossible to tell. Some blades gradually narrowed to a point all long the blade, making an acute angle at the tip...

...other blades had parallel bladed sides and then tapered off to a "V" at the end, making a less "pointy" tip.

Both daggers and longsowrds poseesed this vareity in the google searches. I'd assume then (and this is guessing) that in D&D, Longswords are assumed to have noticably less pointy tips than Daggers.
