Is anyone actually playing Modern?

I'm running a d20 Modern campaign right now, actually. It's going VERY well and everyone involved is having an absolute blast. We've had no issues with the rules, classes, etc. The group's level 3 now. What's also really cool is that we're using it as a sort of rethinking of an old D&D campaign we played wherein demons tried to invade the Forgotten Realms. They get the added appeal of familiar characters with a new spin, as well as being able to play a modern-day campaign. :)

Reminds me. The week before last everyone's schedule was screwed up and we ended up with less time than normal to play. Instead of trying to scrunch the finale of Episode 6 ("Dixieland") into the abbreviated time we played a one-off. Everyone made up quick and dirty 11th level chars (easier said than done) and we did a Stargate type of thing. We were Marines sent thru a portal and ended up in a DND type world. Great gobs of combat. Damn, storm giants are tough  !

storm giants, teehee. Who dm'ed? Did they just shoot from the hip or had they planned a bit of this one-shotter beforehand?

Takyris- Ahh, gotcha. Wait?, any world/system you have to do work to get it going...well unless you buy an adventure. But normally, eh, not sure what they are complaining about. Silly complainers.

Old Drew, as usual. We came up with a system where he picked a random monster from the 3.5 MM. He'd then do a quick WP/VP conversion and we'd be set to go. While he was converting the rest of us threw together terrain for the encounter location. There was much shooting from the hip.

And a tactical vest does pretty much nothin' against lightning strikes.

Ya, in our fantasy campaign (currently on hold), we created our own world. Actually sketched it out literally on a cocktail napkin over beers years ago. Played it for three years, filling in lots of details. We keep threatening each other to write it up and publish a PDF, but it's hard enough to keep all our other crap going.

Playing Modern in our hometown really does make it easier, tho. You've already got a set history, geography, political and societal arenas. In a previous episode, the sewer and power grids were fairly important components of the adventure. Ledded happened across a big plat of the region's power grid system and smuggled it to me before gametime (I was GMing that episode). The looks on the other players' faces was priceless when they went to talk to a contact at the power company.

P1: So where do the main power lines sit?
Me: Well, let's see (pulls huge 3'x4' plat of region power grid out from under table and unrolls it)...
P1,2&3: Holy CRAP!
Me & Ledded: :D  :p

Of course, Drew Id is the best at that....

Actually, I just got it a few days ago, and have to say it reads better than the D&D PHB and DMG. I'm considering rebuilding the magic using classes so that they can be used with the basic D20M rules, and just chucking my D&D books wholesale...

D20 Modern Fantasy anyone?

Mr. Oberon

I'm having a rough time finding players for this as well.

I've tried posting at local game shops, but there are too many playing D&D and Warhammer...

I've tried posting for IRC based games (which are less popular in general), but have so far got no hits.

It sucks. I had a modern irc game going for 2 or 3 games then went away for a while and now nobody can play.

Someone voiced annoyance that d20 Modern wasn't ready for them to play, because they had to build a world. ...

And where is the world map in the three core D&D books?!? O.o For d20 Modern, just look out your window or turn on your TV!

Most guys I know have to either buy Forgotten Realms (so now it's equal to Urban Arcana) or they make up a world from scratch.

This sort of reminds me of the time a poor GM said, "No. D&D for my next game, so I am going to let my players email vote what they want to play."

I sent my email vote and then went to the GM house. There. were. Forgotten. Realms. books. everywhere. Every player but me (and the GM) had bought their entire FR collection. And WotC has put out what? Four or five FR books? Almost all of it was the TSR stuff.

The true reason for D&D success, a players parinoia that he's not still getting a ROI on a book he bought 10 years ago.

games

well, I'm lucky in that I'm part of a club here at Colorado State. I'm in a d20 Modern and a 20 SW game, and just left a D&D 3/3.5 game. (I knew more about the rules then the GM, and he had to many assumptions, so I left playing and now help out with rules)

I also play over at RPOL, and I'm an active member (along with my parents  ) of the RPGA in Denver. So, I don't have much lack of games, but I'm lucky, and I'm stubborn enough to go out and find games, rather then to sit back and wait for them to come to me. Heck, during the semester, I sometimes played all night with my friends just because it was too cold to go back to the dorms and we were too caffeinated to sleep anyway.

I'll be starting a game after chrismas.
I have one guy who responded to the question 'What would you like to see in a game' replied "I've never gotten to play in a campaign with guns." Another guy would play in almost anything I'd offer. And there are a couple more who might be interested.
Mostly, it's a matter of me staying with one idea long enough to get an adventure or two and some NPC's mapped out.

As it is, I'll probablly be picking up UA, and never looking back to classic D&D chargen again.

Out of my old group, only one guy would have a problem with it not being D&D. Everyone else either has problems with time, or with me. :D

Guys...

As much as I dislike D&D gamers scoffing at d20 Modern, I also dislike d20 Modern gamers scoffing at D&D. After all, I play both of them, and I don't favor one over the other.

It's better to show them we are better more tolerant individual and accept BOTH ruleset for what each can suitable for.
