I voted yes, as the rules have much to recommend despite some flaws. For those who want more realistic rules, there are some optional rules to make it hard for people to survive serious damage. or to make things better fit their vision of a game. However, I think the D&D rules can model fantasy novels, folklore, legends, and mythology (where some heroes were nearly invincible), and many other sources of inspiration fairly well.) All systems have their flaws, and no one system can please everyone all the time.

I also like many other D20 games and have enjoyed some good non-D20 games, such as Mage the Ascension. I think that one benefit that gamers have today over the past is that there are many more choices for games, supplements, and campaign settings. In the end, what I think matters most is whether people are having fun at the gaming table -- regardless of what rules system they use.

I said "yes" because right now, there's no doubt in my mind that it is my favorite. On the other hand, my tastes in things change easily, and change a lot. My love of D&D has endured these many years while seeing the rise and fall of many other interests, but I think that's mostly due to the fact that I haven't really played or read that many other RPGs.

Since I got to college, I've read Call of Cthulhu d20, which I love and am dying to run, but surprisingly few of my gamer/nerd friends are in the know about the writings of Lovecraft, so that nixes that for the immediate future. Even if I could run/play it though, I'd have to go back to D&D for my fantasy fix, as CoC's hopelessly nihilistic cosmology doesn't appeal to me every day of the week (when it does, man oh man it does though).

I also got a chance to play the Serenity RPG. The campaign I was in was an absolute blast, and it will probably always be one of my favorite roleplaying experiences ever, but in the end, being sci-fi with a fairly limited setting, I don't think it had the potential for limitless adventure that D&D does.

I even got the chance to play other fantasy games, like Fireborn and Shadowrun, but turned those down, simply because they weren't D&D enough.

So for the time being, I think D&D (any edition, I should say, with the possible exception of 2nd) will remain unchallenged on its throne as the best RPG in my mind. I recently picked up Exalted 2E though, so who can say what tommorow may bring?

Nope.

However, it does have some of my favorite settings - from Birthright to Iron Kingdoms. I do not play in any of the current 'official' D&D settings, but I have to admit that Eberron sounds like a fun setting. (Forgottenhawk Greyrealms on the other hand bores me a good deal.)

I want to say no, really I do, but I suspect that'd just be me lying to myself. DnD is the only RPG I've used to run more than one campaign over the last twenty years (and I've only really run campaigns longer than six months in about four systems overall).

My all-time favorite is basic/expert/etc D&D -- either the Moldvay/Cook/Marsh version (B/X) or the Mentzer Basic/Expert/Companion/Master/Immortal rules (BECMI).

I'm currently running Castles & Crusades and Lejendary Adventure, and I like both of them a lot; it'll be interesting to see if they hold up as well as classic D&D.
